p.1 #1 · Cheetah hunt on the Serengeti - intense content
My husband and I spent 12 days in the Serengeti with Jim Blue (a FM member) and his photo safari - this was a trip of a life time - there were 6 photographers in 2 custom land cruisers - we got up at 4:30 am - out the door with cameras in hand by 5:30am - spent all day shooting and returning for dinner around 8 pm - this was hard core photography - especially for an old lady like me - but I loved it - there were so many photo ops I have been digging thru my 15,000+ shots trying to ferret out something worthy for FM - here is my story
This was a group of 5 cheetahs (mom and 4 cubs) out on a learning trip - they caught a hare as a first course - then as they were departing a lost wildebeest calf came toward our trucks - we were in the process of getting a flat tire changed so we were standing around watching out for any thing that might be a problem - I commented that the calf was coming toward us at the same time the cheetah family had turned around around and took interest in the lone calf - they were about 400 yards away - then the hunt started - all of us saw it developing so we scrambled back into our truck with cameras at ready waiting to see what would happen - it unfolded quickly - the mother took the lead and broke into a slow gallop that quickly turned into a full tilt chase - that took less than 5 seconds to first tag the calf - the other cubs finally showed up and helped with the take down and killing - this was one of the most dramatic scenes I have ever witnessed and shot pictures of -
hope you enjoy the sequence -
