I wondered about plane trails, but then that led me to...how did you get a battery to last that long, even with two batteries in my grip, I don't think my camera would shoot for that long.
One battery in the cam, one in the grip. If you turn off everything you dont need like image review, lcd illumination, distortion control etc it will make a considerable difference to the runtime.

Killer shot(s)! Kind of looks like a "portal" which reminds me of all the talk last year about the Mayan calendar and one of the theories of the Mayans returning to this dimension though such a portal....sweet!

If they come through i'll be there to take a pic of it

this is exceptionaly close to a true circle and only for one reason. the Nikon 14-24 lens which was used.
lens distortion is what is throwing you here, nothing to do with keeping the camera "dead on"
excellent image too!

Hey Simon,
Don't get me wrong. YES, it is very excellent image that is not easy to take!
I also have 14-24 mm lens and noticed distortion especially at 14 mm. If that is what is causing the somewhat deviated circular rings.. then I don't know what to say. However, it is intrinsically rather difficult, nor necessary to have the perfectly circular trails anyway.
I was comfortably complementing the image with some humor which you seemed to get very rude or offensive.

There's also atmosphereic refraction at play here, which has an effect on the shape of the trails. That's what causes the sun or the moon to appear oval shaped when close to the horizon.

To be honest with you, the oval shape of the trail patterns are much better than dead circular trail patterns. The latter is really boring in many ways. I was in fact complementing your 7.5 hr trail with an awe! Somehow my humor made some people misunderstood.
You did an incredible job of getting this difficult image done! I have been preparing myself into night photography only drawback is how I can stay at night all by myself. I will be scared to death...

Take easy.

no problem for me here, suggest you use differing smilies then as I read your post as quite a critisisim.
