Simply gorgeous! This is one of the best B&W conversions that I've yet to see.
After shooting 2 years of B&W converted IR, I can say that this would easily pass as an IR shot. It has the IR look & feel; the dark sky, the light trees and the general contrasty appearance. I'm surprised to see so many comments on this image, not because it's not fantastic, but because many folks here seem to have some sort of stigma against IR This image definitely has an IR feel... I'm curious what the reaction would have been if you posted this as an IR shot.
I've been refining my post-processing techniques for a couple years, in order to give my IR shots the B&W mood that I'm after. There is a look that IR provides that you simply can't get with a regular B&W conversion (at least that's what I thought until now). I'm and engineer, not an artist. So this artistic process has taken longer and more difficult that I imagined. But I've learned a lot here on FM. It's shots like this that teach me a lot and also show me how far I have yet to go.
Thanks for sharing this photo and opening my eyes a bit...
Thanks Eric. This definitely has an IR resemblance. Having used (in BW conversion) the Blue/Yellow Channel for the Landscape, and a Digital Red filtered sky (going dark) has all the makings of an IR to some degree. The channel isolation and pre-conversion chroma tweaks really do create a unique looking conversion when compared to the original. I wish I had more time on my hands, I should really write a tutorial or create a video on how to do this conversion. -m
It's great to see that you are getting a break to focus on some photography again. And I hope that all those who come on here and poo poo the coolness of shooting an icon can read your words and see the result. It's a shame there are those who try to get others to not shoot the iconic places. I hope this will be an encouragement to others to place their vision on an iconic view point.
Great work here, I sure like it!
Jim
Completely agree Jim, they're icons for a reason. It's not to say that more can't be found in lesser known locales, but surely visiting these amazing places give perspective and experience which stay with you for a lifetime. -m
You have captured me with your narrative description on this place Matt. I have not been treated to too many views that have really blown me away though I have appreciated many scenes in nice light. I just had my first visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan and shared many of your same feeling as you did here Your words added even more drama to this shot for me.
Whew.................this image will be imbedded in my mind for many years to come, phenomenal work and interpretation
I don't usually comment on landscapes as there are so many good ones here, but this one is over the top great. Just an absolutely beautiful shot and subsequent process.
Matt, excellent effort in all respects! Spectacular vision!
As has been said, your image, prose, are in mind and heart, are a reminder of the wonder that Yosemite is. My first seeing was at thirteen, a handful of adventures followed and the 'inspiration' just doesn't ware off. You've captured that beauty, magic, most wonderfully.
