i've been spending A LOT of time face down in marshes and on beaches as shorebird migration is in full swing here in massachusetts at the moment. i've been able to track down many of the migrants so here they are!
hudsonian godwit - easily identified by large size, long bill, rust on sides, bright white eyeliner
red knot - medium size, gray feather edging on back, gray eyeliner, yellowish legs, short stubby bill
baird's sandpiper - rare on east coast. buffy brown on chest, buff feather edges in back, black legs, long wings still out beyond tail
ruddy turnstone - very easy to see red on back (though he is slowly losing it), short upturned bill, red legs
Excellent variety of shore birds, Dorian. All well taken and presented.
Congrats on the leucistic piping plover. Great find! Never seen one before.

Dorian, marvelous set ! Love the second one, looks like it is walking on water. 5,6, 10 and the last 2 are also my favorites. Congratulations on the leucistic plover, what a glorious find and wonderful shot.
Super duper Dorian!!! Not only is this post spot on photography but it VERY educational as well. Especially for those of us that aren't the best at knowing what to look for in shorebird ID's. Excellent work all around, a tremendous post
Wow, what a great set to enjoy, Dorian. Love your presentation so that I know more about shorebirds.
Great lighting, nice reflection, sharp and detail are well captured by you. Excellent work.

Wow, what a ridiculously good set Dorian. The shorebirds are moving through here as well right now but they're tough to see through the mosquitoes. I wish I could get even a small percentage of these images!
Great information Dorian. Even better pictures. You are right about the last grouping. Best for last. Some real stunners in that group. Well done, but I reserve the right to forget everything I've learned about the field ID tips. Don't see these guys often enough. Spotted sandpiper is pretty exotic most days.

thanks tim. i find many birders who get frustrated by shorebird id since they are very similar. however, there is a systematic way to go aout sorting out who is who so maybe this post will help the folks here dow that moving forward. its just like photography: practice, practice, practice......
