Hey everyone, finally decided to join FM (or finally decided to pay for it, rather), since I have some buying and selling of gear to do. Thought I'd introduce myself to those that don't know me with a recent image.
This is an incoming lightning storm illuminating virga over Oregon's Steens Mountain and the Alvord desert playa at dusk. These are the only fireworks I saw this year, on the eve of our independence day. My ex and I were all set up to camp out here, grilling hot dogs, when the lightning and wind came over Steens mountain with little warning. We packed up the Subaru in a hurry, as I kept setting off 30-second exposures, just missing each burst of lightning between them.
The second I got this exposure, we raced off the playa and up the long dirt road at 60mph, as the storm rolled in behind us. We didn't want to be the tallest objects for miles, in the middle of a lightning storm (nor did I want to pay for a tow out of mud).

Very cool looking shot here. I am glad you were able to capture one shot with lightning in it. Now how come you kept missing the other bolts? When it comes to lightning, the normal thing to do is to dial in the exposure and then lock in your remote release and let it just continually take shots.
Hey everyone, thanks. Jeffrey, I used to be over on NPN, but I'd prefer not to pay $50 up front for another year. I like that FM allows payment month-to-month.
Jim, I was using a wireless ML-L3 remote - it doesn't have a lock. I was mashing it as fast as I could between exposures, but I just got unlucky enough that most of the strikes landed in that 1-second window between exposures - the first 6 or so times anyway. This was probably the best compositionally-lucky strike anyway, so I'm happy with it.
Good to see you here, Brian, Justin, and TJ! I know Metternich, Marino, and Coscorrosa are around as well..
