IME keep in mind this isn't much of a landscape, architecture, commercial lens. I think it's a fantastic people, nighttime and artistic lens however.
You said your 50 1.4 does what you need so you have to ask yourself if your photography will need something with this type of character in your kit. To me the 58G can tell stories better than any standard FL lens in nikon's current lineup and even, dare I say it, an otus.
Not landscape? I don't see why not. I use the 50mm and the 85mm frequently for landscapes, of course there is no major foreground DOF like you would get from a 24mm, for example... I think it would do well in that area as well as with people, as you mentioned. I guess I just want a really nice 50~ish mm lens and I suppose the 58 is the one. I just find it hard to believe that it costs so much. It, like the 50mm, is not a hard lens to make. I guess it is the quality of the glass....who knows. Either way I think it is grossly over priced.
I bet I may use this 58mm more once I have it. So far I haven't enjoyed the 50mm Nikon or the sigma 50mm. They just were not sharp enough wide open. So, because of that, I did not use them much. I'll be in touch... thanks for the help.
Ok..... I bought the 58mm today. So far I like it. I took a photo of a security camera on the side of a building today, wide open it was very sharp. I focused on that same camera again and while holding the af lock, I moved that camera to the extreme lower left of the viewfinder and took another photo, it was still just as sharp, even in the corner! I was impressed. Now I just need to take some shots of the night sky using my AstroTrac and shoot for 5 minutes and find out how well it handles pinpoints of light. With no coma, the image of the stars should look great.
I did not have to do any fine tuning on the lens with my two bodies (D800E/800), default AF seems fine. However I did notice that low contrast images tend to "fool" the focus and the camera tells you its in focus, but it is really not. Otherwise, there is no problem with shooting at f/2.8 in the daytime, the image is sharp. I think I will enjoy using this lens. I will use it Sunday to shoot some bridal portraits outdoors. That should be fun...
Thanks to all of you who responded to my threads and helped with your opinions and suggestions.

I've seen a lot of fantastic images in this thread so please keep them coming!
For those who have the pleasure of owning this lens, how is the focus speed (especially in low light)? Does it hunt when the light drops or is it more comparable to some of the pro zooms like the 24-70?

I feel like nothing focuses as fast as the 24-70mm. I personally feel like center point is good to nail but the outer it hunts.

^Great stuff as usual, love the last one. How are you liking the Df so far in comparison to other Nikon bodies and do you use it a lot in MF?
Thanks. I like the Df images but I'm not completely sold on the design including the dials - I'm a little slow in making iso adjustments. Haven't tried MF lenses.
Hey guys/gals.... here are some of my first real portraits with my new 58mm and the D800: These are recent bridal portraits... Please don't tell me that these images are in the wrong forum. I'm simply adding to this 58mm lens thread.
So far I really like the lens. I love it more as I shoot with it. It really is the "near perfect" focal length.
