I already have 28 1.4D (can't decide if 24 or 35 so just got 28), 50 1.4G and 85 1.4G..I've shot a whole session with my 50 1.4G before, thinking of the 58mm..is it really that much better for the price? I do see that "bokeh swirl" on some of the photos here.

Really itching to get this lens right now. It's amazing how rare it is to see someone selling this lens in the BS forums.
It's a niche lens catering towards people looking for a certain character... A character you won't find anywhere else. So usually, if you buy it, it's going to end up glued to your camera.
That said, now on another side of the fence, miss this lens

(not being sarcastic) Was that hard or not?
It can be tricky, not hard or impossible.
From the few shots I took yesterday, even the sharp areas have a really unique rendering to them. Almost a grainy look. I had to look at my ISO a few times to see where I was shooting. Chromatic aberration out the ASS, is that also normal?
The DOF feels thinner than an 85/1.4 as well because of how fast it creams everything.
These aren't complaints, but this is like no lens I've ever used before. It's more like my ancient 50/1.4 pre-ai; tons of character that you need to know how to use.
I cannot wait to get outdoors with this things...especially in the woods.
I keep reading around the web about field curvature... I'm not a pixel peeper and don't get into the techy side of lenses. Does that essentially mean my plane of focus is curved?

At closer focus distances the field is curved. As you get towards infinity, the curvature flattens out. The curvature is what lends to the very nice swirly looking bokeh at closer focus.
sir jason, youre right the 50 f1.8 does a pretty good job of isolation for what you consider. though, when the 58G hits with the overall rendering, its really hard to beat, imo.

Sometimes. It depends on the subject.... contrasty scenes, yes. Can you post a sample?
Some tips.. I highly suggest AF Fine tuning this lens. Tune it until the focus point at 1.4 is not hazy anymore. It may take +5, it can take +20. Doesn't matter. That does not mean the lens has an issue, IMO it's just the nature of this lens. As for nailing the focus, I suggest AF-C, release priority, single point, set a3 - Focus tracking with lock on to OFF. Then practice nailing the shot. The 58 does have some learning curve, but you'll get used to it.

Yeah, I can post a sample when I get home. I took a snap of my wife, her head turned slightly, where her hair meets her face there was the distinct green hue of LoCA. I honestly don't care, but I was a little surprised by it. I did read a few blogs today that said the LoCA was pretty pronounced.
I did encounter the haze when I missed, but the grain was there even when it nailed. I did some snooping around of 100% shots/crops and it seems to be normal. As for AF, what you described is how I shoot everything. I have found the DF does better when you switch over to 9pt though. The DF's AF leaves a lot to be desired, so I don't think I'm going to bother much with tuning because I may just be chasing a shitty AF system. I did notice the outer focus points were consistently soft, but could that be the field curvature business?
I'm mostly thinking out loud with all of this in hopes that you guys will usher me through the learning curve Buying a refurb one side says "this lens is 100%" and the other says "maybe they said 'meh good enough' " My first DF, that was junk, just has me skittish lately with new gear.
