That's a valid approach. I do the opposite myself - intensive sharpening on the subject and leave the beautiful bokeh as-is. I suppose it's difficult to design a lens that's very sharp wide-open while also having smooth bokeh. The only lenses I've seen that manage this well are the Leica Summilux 50mm f/1.4 and the Noctilux f/0.95. I'm sure there must be others.
Here are a couple of night time shots, both focused at infinity. Both of them were shot raw and run through LR5 without any additional corrections or processing. The first is at f/1.4 and the second at f/8. I really like this lens and I think it goes exceptionally well with the 24mm 1.4G as a two lens kit (similar to the 35/85 1.4G combo). All the chatter about it not being sharp wide open is nonsensical when you look at the images at normal print sizes or on the iPad's retina display imo.

Nice... Can we see a 100% crop from both images? I'd like too see the detail at f/1.4 & f/8. From this post, it's difficult to tell how the lens really performes.

Honestly, I can't make heads or tails of those shots- unless they are center 1:1 crops, neither appear wide-open; and if one was wide-open, it'd likely be the second one.
Our friend's daughter visited a few days ago and I decided to take a few photos with the 58.
She was quite a moving target but I managed to get a few images.
Mom loves them by the way.
No post work except exposure and cropping.
All wide open at f/1.4.
I would love to see the Otus perform here with fast moving children without AF! !
Sharpness is nothing if you cannot focus on your subject...
I'd like to load some samples for you to prove you wrong! Maybe later. MF is prefered in a lots of case. actually, in above fine images of cute girl, I bet MF will be even better.
BTW, superb Portrat of very cute girl. Joe, thanks for sharing.

Here you go:
I might add that I don't really care for 100% crops myself, and I think judging the lens based solely on crops is a mistake. The images it puts out have a nice feel to them which is good enough for me, especially compared to the 50mm 1.4G.

Thank you for taking the time to post 100% crops of these two images that you recently took. From what I can tell, the lens looks pretty impressive. I would like to test one out by shooting the Milky Way or other parts of the sky on my Astro track for a five or so minutes exposure. Would like to know what f-stop I could use at a minimum to get good star images all the way to the edge. It looks like it's a nice all-around lens. However I wouldn't necessarily use it for portraits, but I definitely think it would be a nice one for astrophotography and other miscellaneous types of photography. Again thank you for the 100% crops. I'm sure there will be others excited to see this and I would not be surprised if they ask for 100% corner crops as well.
Todd, glad to help. If anyone does want corner crops I'm happy to provide them. I've noticed that the lens sharpens up considerably by f/1.6 so there is not a lot of compromise in bumping the ISO. I'll post more examples later if anyone is interested.

It is possible to take pictures of fast moving children. There were sport photographers in the old days who were able to take action shots. It is just not as easy...
Try to take pictures at f1.4 in manual focus with fast, erratic moving children. You will have some good shots, but your rate of success will be lower than with a fast DSLR and good AF.
The text on the crops says it's the center but in fact appears to be right of center. Was the focus point within this crop? Also, what's the opinion of the star bursts at each light? I find them distracting and note that my 85 1.4g does the same thing at f8. Thanks for posting these crops.
