Great shots, Robert! Nice panning at 1/50 of a second!!! I have never shot motor race. Looks like a lot of fun. The Sigma 300-600 seems to be a tremendous lens at a very reasonable price. I would be tempted if Sony didn't restrict the FPS and if it took 1.4X TC.
A few from yesterday.

You should give motorsports a try. Who knows, you might enjoy it! 😊
I’m impressed with the Sigma so far. The versatility of a zoom is really beneficial. I’m looking forward to trying it for airshows
The 400-800mm is just a hair too long for formation shots. I’m hoping 300mm on the Sigma might do the trick. And allow me to use a single lens. And not the dual lens/body setup I normally use
Not sure how easy it would be to take Osprey shots diving like yours with the Sigma. That’s a lot of enertia to start and stop
Great shots by the way! The 300mm + TC is really suited for that particular scenario ...Show more →
Sigma 300-600 for airshows?? Are you hand holding it or putting it on tripod? For several years, I used the Sony 600GM+1.4TC for airshow to get me to 840mm. I have never used tripod for airshow, always hand held. This may chnage as I am dipping my toes into doing video.
For the ospreys, more often than not, I can't keep them in frame when they dive. I am too old and slow. The friend whom I shot ospreys with yesterday gave a very good analogy. He said shooting bald eagles diving is like shooting airplanes landing, very predictable, and they slow down as they get closer to the water. Ospreys are the opposite. I will be spending a few days here and there this month to shoot bald eagles and ospreys. It's the peak season here now.

Another winner Ross. Love the colors.
A little sunrise action from Africa
Thank you Ed! You got some gorgeous images from Africa, beautiful light and colors!

Always enjoy your peregrine shots, Joshua! I noticed you have shot the peregrine with quite a few different lenses over the years. I also use the 400-800 for birds when it's really bright.

Thank you very much, Doug! Yes, and the 400-800mm lens is the most recent lens for that purpose but I am not selling my 600mm... at least not yet. I think I will take that lens out this weekend. I have been lazy lately though... the age and its drawbacks is creeping up fast on me.
Your osprey images are truly awesome, Doug! I wish I could get something similar over here... but again, the urge to go out and shoot is on a fairly steep decline lately. Oh, well.

Thank you Joshua! I am bummed that the planned air-to-air shoot in two weeks just got cancelled because the skyvan's engines need to be replaced, not in time to make it fly for the project. But it's better than flying in a plane with bad engines.

The plan is handheld for air shows. Should be Ok (fingers crossed)
High shutter speeds with jets should minimize any shakiness on my part. My only concern is prop planes and the slow shutter speeds needed for good prop blur. My keeper rate might go even lower than it already is 😄
The inability to focus while zooming may also require a little adjustment to technique. Might take a little time to build the muscle memory to let off the AF, zoom, then reacquire focus again
Never tried photographing Ospreys before. Looks tough. I always admire you and the rest of the wildlife photogs here. You guys make it look easy, even though I know it’s not
