One of the best photos I have ever seen. And I really like that you kept the foreground in the shade.

Again, a big fat thank you to everyone. I really appreciate the comments and compliments.

Am I mistaken in thinking you are standing on basically the highest point of the rim during what the park called a "severe thunderstorm"? Judging by the amount of lightning you (and others) seem to have captured from what was clearly a magical evening, I am just wondering if your hair started standing on end, hehe. I'm betting the thunder came in less than 30 seconds from that strike, and the literature for my lightning trigger says anything under 30 seconds between flash and thunder and you are in the danger zone

Great image. Cheers.

Well, yes there is some risk. No this is not the highest point. But yes, the wind can shift and the lightening storm can be on you in an instant, as is what happened one day earlier. I was shooting a more violent thunderstorm going buy the back side in the distance and all of a sudden the wind shifted toward me, I immediately took off down to the road and to my car for shelter. Lightening was striking everywhere!!! But the night this was taken there were not many strikes and they were all on the other side of the lake moving away. Even the ranger standing right behind me was not nervous. So it depends. But to error on the side of caution is a good rule!

Hi Mark. Beautiful image! A subtle touch that I like about this one compared to "spellbound" is the shadow of the peak found right in the center of the frame at the horizon. Weird to like that when surrounded by so much epicness, but it's a really cool little touch. The colors of the rainbow in this brighter image also come through a little stronger too. Very nice.

Thank you for pointing that out. I love that area too. Light rays shooting through back there.

Nice catch Mark!

If I had to be picky, I have to mention the foreground is a little lacking, but really, who cares?

I agree. If it was up to me there would have been a field of flowers there. Just had to work with what I was handed. This is the best I could have done in this area. It is very cliffy and you cant run around here.

This is a sick photo. Ignore any criticisms. I wish i had been there! Congrats!

It's OK, I'm good with the foreground and think it works and I really don't mind if some people point out that it is not the best foreground ever... Really Right Stuff is happy about it, as well as the BBC, so that is cool (Stay tuned).

Why, thank you! Actually I didn't really do much. The processing is pretty much spot on to how it looked in real life.

West Coast Imaging does great Metal now. Just have to know how to perfect the prepping of the files. They are actually affordable too. Give it a try man.

Firstly, congratulations on the capture, both the timing, and your perseverance. Beautiful!

But, 3,000 images from a landscape shoot? Wow. That is a record in my opinion

Mark, Just about all accolades I can say about your composition have been stated above. Just a phenominal piece of work. You have that natural talent of a unseen tethered connection between mind, eye and camera. Would love to have that on a continous basis as you and others here...Well done and congrats!!
I look at the winners of contests in Outdoor Photo, Shutterbug, Digital and others and I must say, you beat them all.
