No posts about the cream machine since June?! Oh come on, I also fell into the ML realm and left the D-SLR to collect dust but when it goes for a spin it always delivers...
p.s. those who claim this not being a sharp lens, eager to read your comments
I just picked up a like new copy of this beauty from close to the end of it's production (based on the serial number).Early signs of Autumn 4 by Paul Martin, on Flickr
Whew, love this lens and thread. Every time I find myself paging through the images here I get wild ideas of getting this lens and a D800 again. Those two were delightful (plus the 35 f/2D). Great work here, good to see it all continuing.
On my flickr I have two albums, one for each lens, the G one is a bargain lens, I did really enjoy using it especially for male portraiture, got the D one as it was one of my dream lenses and the only advantage of the G vs the D is the ability of the former to be used in AF on a mirrorless body through the adaptor.
Compared to the 1.8G, (which I owned awhile ago), I don't think the AF is quite as fast. I don't find it slow though at all, though I have only shot it in single shot. As far as sharpness at similar apertures, they are both are very sharp in the center. The 1.8G seems sharper away from the center and probably just touch sharper in the center. If you're looking for sharpness across the frame the 1.8G is going to be better, but I think you get the 1.4D for the rendering vs absolute sharpness. I like them both, the 1.8G is a great used pick up right now.
