Thanks for the clarification, Mark. You had me wondering for a bit. Yep, one does have to lower a Mac's screen brightness significantly for print. No doubt they are set for "bright and beautiful" and not necessarily the best edit/print calibration. That said, once dialed in, they print well.
Currently, I don't calibrate my monitor for web display. I leave it at 80-90cd/cm2. And yes, turns out not as accurate as I would like, sometimes But that gets into your comment about color management on other devices. No matter what I calibrate, I don't control the end viewer's calibration or even which device used to view my images. I seek middle ground and hope it turns out. And that is precisely why I don't get too concerned about brightness when I view or critique an image. If I do mention brightness, I always state it is what I see on my device and may not necessarily reflect how the photographers edited the image. That said, I do find it useful if many comments are directly at image brightness. The larger the sample size of comments, the more accurate the comments become.

I think 80-90 might be fine if you are editing in a very dark room. You might try 130cd since most color experts advocate for that for web (at least 120). I believe with the brightness of monitors today it is the general middle ground, or as Bruce Fraser used to say "shooting for the middle of a very wide barn door opening." But it does necessitate separate calibrations for print (as makes complete sense). That does not bug me since the X-Rite i1 only take a few minutes to run... And yes, even though the Mac 27 inch (I sometimes use) is Srgb only and I print exclusively on the new proprietary Lumachrome HD from Nevada Art Printers, which prints an ultra wide gamut (such as ProPhoto) you still can get great results with care and some test printing before doing the biggies...
Lovely image Mark. I haven't posted on here in probably a year, but I liked this image enough that I dug up my old password to log in and comment about how lovely of an image this is.
Bravo sir, well deserved accolade on the image. I often find myself in spots like this, and the visual sensory overload rarely comes off this close, true eye candy, well done.

Congrats Mark, beautiful image! I always enjoy reading your comments and is inspirational that you typically respond to everyone as well.
Thank you. Sorry for my tardiness here. I have just started a 7-9 month photo trip of a lifetime (even bigger than last year) where I live out of my SUV and sometimes it is exceedingly hard to get to these communications. But I appreciate every single person who takes the time to write!

Thank you. I agree. A little more busy than is typical for me.
