Spent a week up around the North West shore of Lake Superior near the Minnesota - Canada border. I captured a variety of compositions and moods. These first two are images I had pre visualized months before. I wanted to create fine art images that had a great sense of mood with simplicity. Using extreme long exposures (to smooth the chaotic environment, creating an atmosphere of tranquil serenity), deliberate compositions, and multiple filtration. On the second shot you can see a much darker sky using a 3 stop hard filter along with the 10 stop ND. Lots of research went into finding locations for this trip. I kept a bit of warmth to the conversion. My intention was a subtle warmth hoping to create an even more inviting image for the viewer.
Wow mate - these are incredible. I also surprisingly like the warm toning on the B&W - normally I prefer cooler colours but these work fantastically. I love the first but I keep coming back to the second - there's something so pleasantly jarring about the sharp transition from water to sky. Well done!
I like them, the horizon transition looks too hard/abrupt to me, but that's just a personnal feeling. The North shore is a very picturesque place. How long were the exposures?
Love the stillness of #1. #2 is an interesting contrast between the motion in the sky and the calm of the water, the tension produced is almost unsettling.

Hi John. I kept the transition quite hard in both, but if you zoom in on the final high resolution files, it's a bit softer.
Love the Superior shore !
I don't have the files in front of me right now, but the first one is around 10 minutes, the second five minutes if I remember correctly.
Thanks for your comments / critique everyone!

More outstanding work yet again Matt! #1 is just amazing and you achieved your goal perfectly with it.
#2 I had to do a double take on it as at first it looked like two separate images pasted together.
A little too strong/crisp of a horizon for my taste. I think it might be the sharp tonality jump that is throwing me off.
I'd say all your planning paid off looking at these shots.

Sweet shots Matt! Always out of the box thinking! I love it.
I too might tame #2's difference between sky and water...

Thanks for your input guys. I think I will tame the exposure on the top of #2, and soften the transition zone more.
Appreciate your thoughts!
