Great images on your Batis 18mm f/2.8. I got lucky and found a mint 18mm this past week on the Buy and Sell forum here and it just arrived today. Really looking forward to using the new to me lens. I used to own one but for reasons I can’t remember selling it. I think it I let it go when I either bought the FE 20mm f/1.8 GM or when I bought the FE 16-35mm f/2.8 or the version II.
Still I’m really happy to now have it back. Just wondering, does it need a firmware update? Didn’t have a chance to check that out before jumping in and rebuying it.

Congratulations on your new lens. No, a firmware update isn't necessary. Only the Batis 40mm f/2 CF received an update. I really like the Batis 18mm: 330 grams, very high microcontrast, the images give me a strong sense of depth and three-dimensionality, lovely colors, superb sharpness wide open… It's a lot of fun shooting with it!
When I viewed this image on our 65-inch OLED TV and my wife walked in, she spontaneously said that she could feel the light on her skin just by looking at the picture.
I'm sure we all know that feeling: you're in a beautiful place, and the light creates a very special atmosphere. You take a photo – maybe without any particular subject in mind – you just want to capture that unique light and mood. But back home, you realize the image simply doesn't convey that feeling, even though you did everything right. The shot looks clinical, sterile, emotionally flat.
That's exactly what I've come to appreciate about all the Batis lenses. With minimal effort, they reproduce what you actually felt on location – that unique, magical light.
