This weekend I was in Cabo. We went whale watching on a large boat, and saw a few swimming and barely surfacing, but no breaching. Sunday I hired a small boat to take me out again. We were in 8' waves, and thank goodness I could count on the driver to handle the boat and keep us upright as I was shooting these magnificent creatures flying out of the water. What an experience. My D750 and Nikon 70-200 were hit by wave after wave for over an hour and held up well!
Fabulous....great shots and a testament to the equipment that it stood up to the pounding....salt water and electronics usually do not play very well together.

Yea, I was nervous. I wiped it all down real well when I got back to the room. Co tinted to use it yesterday and today, and everything seems fine still.

Fantastic shots! I was in Alaska last summer and hoped to get similar shots. But I was told that the humpbacks rarely breach in Alaskan waters. They seem to reserve that behavior for the lower latitudes.
I am no expert, but I believe they do it, along with rolling and smacking the waters with their fins to attract a mate. they are down south to mate and also have their babies.

Not true, I am afraid. I've seen lots of breaching in Alaskan water. You had an unlucky day...
I marked these to show EXIF data, but for some reason it didn't show up on the photos. These were all shot with the D750 and Nikon 70-200 VRII. ISO200 Shutter was between 1/2000-1/2500 and f5.6-6.3. I did use the 1.7x on some of them.
