Thank you kindly for your interesting and pertinent report.

All that you show and say confirms what many of us are hoping for in IQ even with TC14 :-) What was AF like at f8 on the D850?

With TC1.4, AF is a tad slower but still quite fast. I was able to track a motorcycle going at about 30 km/hr toward me easily in burst mode. Did not try anything more challenging than that though. Just whatever happened to come by in front of the shop

Things will get interesting if this lens performs well on the a9.

40Driggs no hope but I'll try given a chance. Bet I won't be the only one giving it a college try.

I imagine that the adapters will continue to improve for the Nikon system.

I have not check Commlite adapter fw for awhile now. Is it still version 6?
I updated mine last time sometimes at the end of last year. If it is still the current fw,
I would not bother yet. It worked well up to 70-200/2.8e FL. 300/4e FL kind of work
but not reliable, not even with stationary object. 200-500 and 500/4e FL did not work at
all from what I remembered. This was tested on A7r iii though so at this time, I highly doubt
that 500/5.6 PF would work.

Suteetat thanks for the input/observation.
Yes, still version 6.
Historically my a7Riii + MC-11 or MBv was behind the AF/AF-C
of the a9.
When the time comes I'll try with hope on the a9 first.

And yes DRiggs I hope for the Commlite to continue improving.
Reading a Brian Smith's site, he gives impression with Nikon glass
adapting is hit or miss and no rhyme or reason as to what works.

Further reading at other sources shows that a lens listed at Commlite as
compatible sometimes isn't and other lenses not listed are.

If it AF's on the D500 I'll not be too greedy. AF'ing on the a9 is just bonus.

It looks like the foot can be unscrewed from the collar. Is this the case?

If so, would that mean one could replace that foot with a longer Arca Swiss foot?

Would an example of that be the piece that MedicineMan shows on previous page?

I assumed the 70-200 Kirk collar mentioned previously was the entire assembly; i.e. the collar that goes around the barrel *and* the foot. But rather, is it just the foot, as this collar does not look like it is removeable?. Is it?

I guess I am confused.

Yes,the replacement foot in the link that MedicineMan posted
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1304041-REG/kirk_lp_64_replacement_lens_foot_for.html

will work with 500/5.6PF. I unscrewed the foot off and at the shop, they had a replacement foot for 70-200/2.8e FL that would fit perfectly fine. However, it was not a Kirk but other brand that I am not familiar with.

Usually Kirk or RRS.
I use the Kirk Security Strap on the longer lenses + an Op-tech Uni-loop.
I've never had the Kirk Security Strap fail or come loose. The Uni-loop is an insurance plan

The Kirk or RRS replacement foot goes onto this-

Then I put one piece of the Uni-loop on the strap and the other piece of the Uni-loop through a boss on the replacement foot. Problem is the Kirk foot ordered for the 500PF doesn't have a strap boss.
No problem. We have a welder/metal fabricator that's done lots of work for us on our campervan build, he'll cut out a strap boss for me.

That could be because you’re using a7r3. I’ve tested and post the video of AF on Nikon 300 PF. Very fast AF on A9.

This will be very convenient then. I will just screw my Black Rapid sling into the bottom of this foot. And if I *do* want to work off a tripod, this Arca Swiss will pop onto my gimbal head (Jobu Jr. 3).

Wish the foot was longer to act as carrying handle. But this is a good start.

Thanks

I see. There is some hope then. I got the Commlite since it first came out and went through 3-4 fw already.
300/4PF went from no focus ring movement at all to slightly movement on fw 4 and finally fw 6 kind of work better (as I went from A7r to r ii then r iii eventually). However with 200-500 and 500/4e FL
I don't think I ever saw the focus ring moved once even with fw 6 on A7r iii.
With fw 4, 70-200/2.8 vr ii was working well but 70-200/2.8e FL focus ring did not move at all. Then fw 6 came along and it was great. Keep my finger's cross on 500/5.6 PF. Unfortunately I don't have any plan to go A9 route so I might have to stick 500/5.6 PF on Z7 instead but not really sure how useful it would be at this point. Most likely it will be used mostly with D850 anyhow.

Speaking of the 300PF, Adorama agrees my 500PF shouldn't be alone.
300 en route.
1.4TCiii en route
Commlite en route.

I wonder what the odds are the 500PF will act a gentlement with the 1.7TCii
Geoff?
9.52 is essentially F10. I don't think my D500 can AF in that darkness ??

Really excited about this lens and happy to hear that the AF is snappier than the 200-500. The big appeal for me is the weight (2 pounds lighter than the 200-500).

You can say the W (weight) word a hundred times. 500PF has musical weight to my ears. Even my last remaining white the 400DOii is hurting me now.
The 300PF and 500PF will buy me some time.
