We receive our first snow of the season on Saturday. This is pretty late for MN, and has made the photography during the rut rather boring. The snow was a welcome addition to an otherwise blah habitat.
I received my refurbished Z7II on Saturday, and was excited to give it a workout. I have not loved photographing wildlife with a 45MP camera in the past, as I struggle to handle edits when I have large numbers of huge files.
Regardless of the latter, I now see the appeal of these large files.

Spoken-well Bruce.

You have a great spot there. The wildlife trust you. He's looking right past you to what he is really interested in. I like that diffused light too.

Yes, I found that I really like the detail in the bigger files too. But I need my D500 for flying birds at the estuary. It's in repair and headed back from Nikon this week.

I know what you mean about the snow. I am ready for it this year. You get your's earlier than we do, along the southern Maine coast. I expect the first snow around Thanksgiving.

A side note: I grew up in a hunting family too, in Maine. We had a hand-hewn log cabin. in Salem, Maine, at the base of Mt. Abraham. Many memories. Vegetarian now. The long lenses are my shooting tools now.

Nature has always been more exciting than anything man has going on.

Hope to see more of your images here, of your deer in the rut, the beaver, etc. Here, I have no place I know of to shoot those deer, like that spot you go to.

Robert, thank you for the kind words and thoughtful response.
While I wish that I lived near Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, or the Black Hills where wildlife is hard to miss, I do acknowledge that my home state has lots of opportunities to make nice wildlife images. As with any location, one must know when to go, where to go, and be conscious of animal patterns and behaviors. While MN has many great locations to photograph wildlife, you should know that I have never photographed a MN wolf, moose, or lynx. We have the largest wolf population in the lower 48 (about 4000 individuals) as well as the largest lynx population. In contrast to places like the Tetons, Yellowstone, and Denali, we do not have valleys that wolves use to trap their prey. Our North Woods are thick and extend across the border into Ontario, Canada. So much like Maine, we are rich in wildlife, but the photo opportunities can be quite thin.

My good fortune with deer, swans, cranes, and the beavers is linked to my knowledge of where they frequent. All of the animals that I photograph live within State and National Park boundaries. The latter translates into populations of animals that receive little to no hunting pressure. With the exception of poachers (damn poachers tool an 16 point buck last year that I've followed for years), the animals do not see humans as a threat. To them, we are much like smelly trees that seem to move about.

I appreciate the D500 dilemma, and like you, I am forever seeking a solution to focal length limits. All I wanted throughout my 30's and 40's was a 600mm lens to hang on the back of a camera. Now that I am in my mid-late 50's, I want nothing to do with that heavy lens. The D500 with 500PF has been my go to camera lens combination for both flight and distant wildlife. While many have adapted the D850 for multi-purpose use, I could never get past the loud shutter in that camera. My 6 months with the combo led to a decision to abandon the camera. I loved the output, but just could not live with the loud mirror and shutter.

Until I can either afford a Z9 or Nikon introduces a mid level cameras with stacked sensor, the Z7II seems to be my D500 replacement body. I fully acknowledge that it will not be as adept in tracking flight images, but I will adapt to its quirks. Fortunately for me, I have little interest in little birds. With targets like eagles, owls, cranes, and loons, I am confident that the Z-bodies will meet my needs.

cheers,
bruce

This just about sums up my experience with the D500/D850, and partly the reason for going to the Z7ii. I flushed an owl once with my D850 from the loud shutter... Never again.

As for long lenses, well I am 30 years old (turning 31 in a couple of weeks) and I'm trying to save up for that giant telephoto lens lol. With the Z lens roadmap showing a smaller 800 and the 400mm F2.8 S, I'm leaning now towards the 400mm F2.8 as it *should* work with an external teleconverter AND the internal teleconverter simultaneously.

Now, where will I find an extra $15k laying around ?

No complaints for the 500PF in the interim!

I'm having a lot of fun with the 500 PF. The level of detail when I do everything right is kind of insane, even on a 20 mp sensor.

Here's a fun shot from this morning. Taken with D500 and 500pf, juvenile Bald Eagle was chasing an Osprey to steal it's fish!

Thank you! Yeah the Osprey dropped it in the water finally and the fish lived to see another day probably with a slight concussion. The Eagle took off, didn't feel like getting wet!

Just a few Eagle shots. The last one was flying out from a tree where is was dark into a white sky so my shutter was way to low at 1/400 but was able to pull the exposure back -2.20 and the detail was still there and sharp for 1/400.

I like to shoot low shutter speed at times but this was more of an accident this time.

I agree with the comments about this lens. Heres a crop of Santa ? coming off the DZ at Sky Dive Arizona, 11/13/2021.
Maybe this year he will jump out of his sleigh with our Nikon GAS presents.:

This lens is insane. When there is considerable distance between subject and background I can't tell any difference in the images from this lens and my big glass. With the roadmap showing more of these types of lens potentially on the way......a great time to be a Nikon shooter.

An example of higher FPS getting an acceptable image with a burst at 1/50.

This is a lifer in seeing and photographing. The last time I heard of a Mandarin duck on the East Coast was in Central Park NY City (about 2 hours from me) I think a year or 2 ago. They just aren't supposed to be in this area. This Mandarin is just an hour from me and has shacked up with a Wood Duck hen (last image). The 4th and 5th image are completely uncropped, he just kept swimming so close to me.

Nice find. I hope to capture a mandarin one of these days.

Shot with the 500 PF + TC14E-III on the Z7 today, and am really surprised how well it works with the TC. Definitely better than cropping. Don't know why I ever hesitated to do this. (And the pinkish winter light is here! )

This is such a beautiful bird with extravagant plumage... I really like the last few in the set.
