I'm just back from a month in Kyrgyzstan and the 100-400 G was used for landscapes, wildlife, portraits and festivals (I took it along especially for the Kok Beru horse polo with a dead goat) .... it was simply awesome and will be going with me on eveery hike from now on. An incredibly versatile lens.

WARNING - those of a delicate disposition to dead animals may not want to view one of the shots below. I've put the shot last for that reason.

Son Kul Lake Glacier 100mm. A bit over-sharpened so more work to do on this one.

Shepard checking on his flock. 400mm. Pity the dog was resting a bit too far forward

Eye AF chose the mother. I should have used MF here. 200mm. Mother's face deliberately softened to come close to that of the child.

Mountain viewed from Altyn Arashan 400mm

WARNING AS ABOVE.

The national sport of Kyrgyzstan : Kok Beru (aka Dead Goat Polo) - 345mm. Quick processing for this thread, I need to spend much more time on this one as I really like it !

I use mine quite frequently, not sure how many shots I've been able to post in the big FE thread, though.

I think already linked above but a lot of us share our 100-400GM images (including myself) in the A9 thread and the older (but not used much) 100-400 thread.

There is no real savings for doing a 100-400 for APS-C...that is why we've never seen one. A smaller 100-400 can be had with a f/6.3 aperture from Sigma instead. APS-C doesn't save size with telephoto lenses.

100-400GM is my only Sony lens and I use it about 80-90% of the time when I use my Sony kit. The rest of the time I adapt Canon lenses. I use it with both 1.4 and 2.0TCs as it actually works amazingly well for IQ and AF (at least on the A9)

I've owned the 100-400 and 100-400II from Canon, this Sony version is every bit as good as the latest Canon version which had the reputation of being the best 100 (80)-400 to date. With TCs it is no match and the Sony takes it.

Here is a taste of the 100-400GM in my hands, some of these have one or the other TC on the lens (the last tai-coloured heron is with the 2xTC):

I use mine alone and with my Sony 1.4X teleconverter with my A7rIII. I like it a lot, just have to get out and shoot much more often.

One and seemingly the most important answer is missing in this poll: "use it and pose images on a regular basis" but scattered in two threads here and in the Nature and Wildlife board. Even with the FE 1.4X the performance of this lens is impressive.

It might be the wrong impression, but it seems that there aren't a lot of 100-400 GM out there, or if there are, those that own it either don't use it much or simply don't share any of those photos here.

It would be great to get your honest answer to this poll.

Do you have some good shots taken with the lens? please share them here if you don't mind.

If you have it but don't really use it, please let us know why and what else you use instead.

Bonus questions: if there was a 100-400 GM for crop sensor, would you

I use it to shoot youth soccer, but the images are not that interesting, but I believe that the A9 and the 100-400mm & 1.4TC works great for my purposes. The background bokeh isn't the greatest, but I'm not buying the 400mm.

I shoot from the behind the opposing team's goal line. This image is reduced resolution for posting, but is also pretty heavily cropped since the players are fairly close to the far goal. Autofocus is lightening fast and pretty accurate. I shoot short burst (usually a single shot) at 10fps using only electronic shutter at 1/2000 second and f/9.0 for 560mm. 20fps for goal line stands, action packed free and corner kicks are pretty impressive with this combination. The ability to shoot the wide mid crossing while close to me at 140mm is an extra benefit of the zoom.

Awards ceremonies and the like are shot with my Samyung 35mm f/2.8 and fill flash. I occasionally use the 135mm Batis for off field.

Lots of great birding shots and even some macro work with this lens posted on the A9 thread.

Here is a shot from last weekends tournament.

A 100-400mm lens is useful sometimes, but it isn't a major usage for me, so there is no way to justify spending over $2K on a lens I only use fairly sparingly. I bought a Canon mount Sigma 100-400, which is really optically quite good and focuses very well on my MC-11. Got both when they we're on sale, for $750 total. Now I have absolutely zero need, nor desire for the GM, as the Sigma performs well and fills that long lens need when I do need it.

Thank you so much ! It's great to hear people are enjoying my work

They take no prisoners running the horses into each other, whips are flying everywhere and it's a bit blood-thirsty as they bring the poor goat out into the pitch for slaughter before using it's headless/footless body as the 'ball'.

The 2nd World Nomad Games are on right now in Kyrgyzstan, I'm sure Afghanistan, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and other ex-Scythian regions/countries, are all competing at Kok Beru (and it's various regional monikers)

Rich,

How do you find the image quality compared to your Leica R apo 280/4?

Werner and Rene post a bunch of great landscape pics with this lens all the time. The images posted here inspired me to buy despite never using any of the teles I’ve ever bought consistently. I ended up selling, as I always do with tele glass, but it delivered great results for me with people, landscape, wildlife and a bunch of event photos of my family during my stint with it. I decided to rent it instead of owning it....

Glad to see some fantastic shots here!

I've never looked inside the A9 thread, so that might explain the reason I haven't seen many photos.

Why not use a 100-400 GM thread?

Joshua, you shared your fantastic photos with some exit info so my question goes to you. Those low shutter, shots 1/125 for example, were on a monopod/tripod? Or are you made of stone?

Thank you, Nuno! Well, I normally take more than just a few images. I normally start out with what we call insurance shots first, just making sure we got well exposed, in-focus images without any movement blur. After those images are in the bag, in the case of perched birds or slow moving targets, I decrease the shutter speed that I feel confident I would get sharp images. The IBIS combined with the OSS of the lens makes me feel confident I could nail them and kept on shooting using those shooting parameters.
