After some deliberating and a little too much viewing images on this forum, I decided to get this lens last Friday. Here are some of my favorites from the first week (a number are cross-posted in the Sony FE images thread):

Evening walks with the 100-400GM trying to keep social distancing through the neighborhood.
Fortunately the weather has been nice enough to walk around dusk.
All hand held - the OIS of the 100-400GM is fantastic (plus the IBIS of the A7RIII) along with unusually steady hands yesterday.

The John Hancock Tower was my very first high rise building I've been to. And Boston is one of my favorite big cities! Haven't been there since the late 70's though sadly! My sister lived in Brookline at the time.

Some local cormorants from this last weekend before the cold front. Recent owner of the A7RIV and the Sony 100-400 and 1.4x teleconverter. Have had the setup for about 2 months now. This is my second attempt at BIF shots at our local cormorant rookery in City Park in Denver, CO. On my first outing, I was trying to keep my ISO at base 100 like I do in landscape shots (clearly a mistake), and the images were obviously too dark and the shutter speed was too slow.
So I went back this last weekend, and the first shot here is at ISO 250 and 1/2500, but at 1:1 there's still what seems like ever so slight blur. Or maybe my expectations of what is capable is off base. The second shot is at ISO 1250 and 1/4000. Motion seems completely stopped, but the grain and noise damage the details. Both are f/8 at 560mm. Edited to preference but with two full stops of exposure increased in the first and a full stop increase in exposure in the second. Both edited in Lightroom. Maybe I'm over processing? 55 sharpness. 45 masking. 10 noise reduction. 75 detail. Am I way off base here or in the right ball park?
For y'all that are much more experienced at this - what's generally the sweet spot with ISO and shutter speed with the 100-400+1.4 combo for BIF?

In keeping with our paying attention to social distancing, we have been going to out of the way places that have no people there at present. Sony A7rRII, Sony GM 100-400mm lens at 152mm, f13 1/500 sec. ISO 400. Image changed to 4:3 format and converted to B&W and manipulated with Topaz Adjust.

been daydreaming about 100-400gm or 200-600g and if a miracle happens and somehow the dreams become possible any thoughts on af performence of these two white monsters on a7r2? I really have no idea how af on a7r2 is in general as I am 100% manual focus shooter... 😇

cheers, A.
I use my 100-400GM on my A72. It might not be optimal, and I know an A9 would do better but I am still blown away by the AF performance. Granted that I haven't tried BiF yet, but nonetheless I'm very satisfied. Sometimes you have to make the best of the gear you have! I wouldn't be halted from buying a dream lens if you don't have the fastest body for it.
