Tried some bird photography with the a9ii today. I still need to work on balancing ISO with optimal shutter speed as I had to Denoise this a bit (taken at ISO 1600). Heavily cropped.

What great images!!!
Until recently have been shooting m43 for wildlife (Panasonic G9 and 100-400 Panasonic lens) and limiting my use of the A7r3 to landscapes to take advantage of the high res sensor. And that was a good fit for both venues. I recently acquired the 100-400 Sony GM lens and took it out on several occasion when looking for wildlife images and was surprised at the detail and color rendition I got with this lens. So I now have a number of questions based on my limited experience with the Sony outfit, and based on my looking through this entire forum all 39+pages of what I consider to be some of the most outstanding images I have come across in one place. Clearly there are individuals this forum who are outstanding photographers.
My questions:
Q1. How have you set your camera up for birds both on branches and in flight?
Q2. I notice the backgrounds on most of the images on this forum are smooth and beautifully out of focus while the subject is crisp and sharp. And for the most part these images are captured at high ISO values like 2000+. Are these straight from the camera or have you done post processing? If so what did you do?
Q3. for these bird images, how have you set your focus controls (assuming you used AF) Spot, wide area, what? Are you using the updated firmware that includes Animal Vs People?
Q4. My lens switches are set as follows: AF, Full vs int to 3m (set to ing to 3 m), Optical Steady Shot set to On, Mode set to 1.
What are the best settings for BIF?
With my G9, I use a Bushhawk shoulder mount and I started using it with the G9 and earlier Panasonic cameras mounting the 100-400 lens two years ago. I do most of my photography while walking local trails in PA and NJ. The Sony kit is only a little bit heaver than the G9 kit and I am considering going to it for all of my photography and selling the G9 and associated lenses because, IMHO,the image quality more than makes up for the slight difference in weight.
Q5. are most of the images here shot from tripod or just camera and lens carrying as one moves about?
Q6. Macro images of butterflies and dragon flys. Did you need to use a supplemental close up lens or extension tubes for these images?
I would appreciate any and all comments from any and all in this group. It is apparent, that as a group, there is an abundance of collective photographic wisdom so clearly reflected in these images.

1 - Branches, single point focus, zone for flight shots
2 - All my shots are processed using Photoshop CC and lately I've been running Topaz Denoise AI on all my shots.
3 - See number 1, yes, latest firmware, but I don't use eye focus for birds. It does work some of the time on dogs and deer.
4 - My switches are in the same position.
5 - All of mine are handheld. (other than star trails and stuff like that)
6 - No. Lens and a teleconverter. Most of the time the 1.4.

Thanks for the quick response. I guess that other than he focus settings, I am in good shape. Interesting, I also use Topaz Denoise. I assume that us why many of the images shown in the forum have such a smooth background. I have been using it for my m43 and it makes a great difference in clarity of the image.
On the A7R3, I set my AF/On button for spot focus and it enables shutter speed to vary for exposure control, but the lens is set at wide open. So at 100mm, the F is fixed at 4.5. And I can't seem to find a way to adjust the F when I use the rear AF/On button to focus with the centered spot. It is nice to shift between spot focus and wide area focus when set C2 for BIF, but not being able to select the F value is a bummer. Any thoughts as to why this is?
