Ronny, your images are just absolutely stunning. I’ll never be able to get macro shots close to as good as yours, but if you don’t mind me picking your brain.
Which lens would you prefer for just starting out with macro for bugs (100-400, 90 or 200-600)? I see you do near indistinguishable shots with all of them.
Thank you ! Really appreciated
Quite a difficult choice
200-600 goes away immediately, 100-400 is much better for semimacro images, closest focusing distance easier to handle, and a little more bright, then uses tubes and you get even closer to real macro, a 90mm so it's real size 1:1 but just for such motifs as dragonflies and butterflies, a zoom and longer focal length is preferable, I think
Of course there is a big price difference between 90g and 100-400 GM
for just quite large insects and frogs, 100-400 works just as well if not better than 90 G, certainly not completely 1:1 but good enough and for smaller insects, a real macro like 90G is better

but as you can see, 100-400 works well for smaller insects
think I used tubes on this one, and a strong crop on this picture

Annual migration of the Monarch Butterflies, as seen in Pacific Grove, California. The abundant rains and cooler than normal temperatures have driven many of these butterflies further South, but about 9,500 of them were there today in a small eucalyptus grove.
All shots were with the 100-400 + 1.4x extender on an a7Riii. I usually do not crop my images, but most of these had about a 1/3 crop.

Beautiful, that's a lot of butterflies! Would love to see it.

I've struggled trying to decide between this one and the 200-600. The 200 - 600's reach appeals to me on the soccer field. I've heard the quality is nearly equal between the two ... guess one would have to decide i the weight were not an issue for sure with the 200-600.

I sold my 100-400 when I got the 200-600. But then I missed it and bought it again. Now I like having both. Also have a 70-200 II inbound, so will reassess the 100-400 when that comes. The 200-600 is a fantastic lens, and a bargain. The 100-400 is also fantastic, much smaller and I love the minimum focusing distance and semi macro abilities it has.

I have both the SEL100400GM and the SEL200600G.
For shooting little songbirds I have the impression that
my A1 with the SEL100400GM is better at focusing on
the bird and not on the background, as it does more often
with the SEL200600G. Anecdotal impression I guess.
I certainly will keep both, as well as my SEL400F28GM.
The SEL70200GM2 is certainly interesting as it takes the Sony teleconverters.
