I have a lot to learn about how to process the Milky Way Core so this is a start but will probably change as I get more experience.

Very nice. Coal Mine Canyon is a great location for that, but I've not seen it used that way.

Fan-Tastic-Shot. You don't need to do much more to reach perfection IMHO!

First off, I agree it's a gorgeous shot. Great job, Gale.

I do wonder why there is such widespread hatred for the blueish sky that so many milky way shots have, when the yellow glow in this shot (that results from pushing the WB away from blue toward yellow) isn't what you see with the naked eye, either?

Greetings -

I see two meteor/airplane streaks, so have to ask if this is a single image (at least of the sky). Fantastic photo!!!!
Thanks,
John

Because the blue color is fake. The only time the night sky is blue, is if there is a bright moon (and of course the MW is very faint if visible at all.)
The light pollution is visible because the sensor is more sensitive than our eyes. The yellowish color is not an added fake prop.

I just figured the "blueish" MW skies were from late blue hour blends of the foreground with the MW. I'm not so sure it's "fake".

I don't think many people "add" blue to the sky intentionally for a prop. For me at least, it's a balance of making the sky black and minimizing the yellow glow of light pollution.

It's always rewarding to find a good foreground to balance the scale/interest of the MW. You've done a good job here!

Start here to learn about realistic night sky colors:

http://clarkvision.com/articles/color.of.the.night.sky/

That site has a plethora of other info, of which much is over my head.

well...i'm not really interested in all that technical information. I like the image in the OP and I like some subtle blue MW images as well.

I was more curious as to what you call "fake" blue. If you're referring to the example in the link you provided, then yeah, that much blue in the night sky is too much for me too.

Awesome capture. The layering in the canyon is striking!
