Yea over 45 years, is that not long enough. Always looking for the fight, you need a life. Go away no one cares. I certainly don’t.

Always the smart ass reply. If you don't care...why not just run along then? I remember not too long ago the Batis was THE lens...now it's the GM...until next year.

But people just continue using their gear and making great images...not waiting for the next shiny toy.

But who am I to say...I just take photos.

Performance with an achromat close-up lens at 0.6x magnification

Today I did a quick test with my Canon 500D achromat. This close up lens goes up to 77mm, so a 82-77mm step-down ring is required when mounting on the FE 135/1.8 GM.

The bare lens achieve 0.25x magnification and with the help of the Canon achromat, magnification goes to 0.6x. (So, a bit more than 1:2)
I tried extension tubes but the results were much worse than using this achromat lens. (2+ diopter)

After reviewing an aperture sequence, f/5.6 seems to be the optimal aperture with this combo. (for optimal center and edges)

Nice.

OOoh, I can test this with my Marumi.

Let me know what you find out. With the Canon 500D, f/5.6 seems to be the optimal aperture. Perhaps with the Marumi will be different since it's a bit stronger. (3+)

The downside is the extra weight. These 77mm achromats get pretty heavy. The Canon + step down ring is about 180g!

What exactly are you looking for in a lens profile on a long lens like this. There really is no distortion. I have not noticed a lot of vignetteing either. Now I say that but mine has been sitting in my safe since I got it. Really just got out of the hospital two days ago and I really can’t work until one more procedure so I can breadth fully again, Monday . Tuesday I got a big gig where I will use it more and get to use it along with a few other new lenses. I switched my AF kit around slightly, so I need to get out .

I know one thing I may have just have a need for a bigger bag.

Luckily my kit has been pretty standard for a few years so my bag works out perfectly (I even got extra room after switching the 100-400 to the 60-600 since that won't fit the bag lol). Lens profile would be nice, there's not much distortion but one click fix for that and the slight vignetting I get that I've been manually adjusting. It's not a deal breaker of any sort, just nice to have.

Sure there are many alternatives to get the shot you are trying to get employing different equipment but I draw on my experience as a chip design engineer where there are also many ways to design a function but often only one "best" way. That best way offers you what is really needed to be competitive giving you the lowest power, highest performance, cheapest implementation, etc.

Different camera gear may get you the same shot but.... I know I can get the image with a 1DX and the Canon 100-400, for example, but the A9 with the Sony 100-400 is lighter, faster, more accurate. I know I have shot both.

The new 135mm f/1.8 GM is faster and more accurate and more responsive than other 135mm solution and lighter if you draw in the 70-200 f/2.8 alternative. And the differences get exaggerated when the gear selection impacts your ability to earn income. No one on these forums should tell another photographer their decision is wrong. You may disagree or have a different opinion but the other photographers gear selection and motivations are never wrong.

I've posted tons of images on FM through the years...unlike others that have never posted an image or just test lenses and never post any actual images.

Sony, Google, Apple, and others have been utilizing AI tech. We clearly need one - the SNR here is lower than Huawei phonecams!

Agree same off topic have nothing to do with the discussion people that keep interrupting the conversation. Don’t even have the gear in question or will never buy it. I bought it love it and once I start feeling better I’ll be testing it more as hopefully get images up. I never been this late on getting images up from when I get a lens. I’ve been in the hospital for two weeks and I still can’t freaking breath. One more procedure to try and fix it maybe today. I going crazy like this. I’m at maybe 60 percent capacity. Sucks

Guess I wasn't sufficiently clear. When one says "I just take photos" I expect to see a post history like toshiro's for example. >90% posts in "images" threads, not in advocacy ones.

As per your suggestion that someone has some sort of fiduciary duty to post "arteestec" photos here before being allowed to engage into any sort of activity.... I don't see where that comes from. My expectation is only that a poster could, if challenged, prove his affirmations. I.e. if he says "Lens X has onion rings bokeh", my expectation is strictly that he could show a photo of said rings, regardless of whatever artistic value that photo may or may not have.

Guy, best wishes for a successful procedure. Breathing is really important, after all. Hope to hear that you are back to normal soon.

Since I let the cat out of the bag. I had a lung biopsy that went a little sideways. I was left with blood or fluid outside my lung against my chest wall that’s squeezing my left lung full capacity so if you look at the X-ray my one lung is diminished in size. They can go in with a needle in my back and remove it. It’s a out patient deal and I was trying to wait until my wife got back in town. Just because but heck with it, I’m scheduling it now. I should be great once this is done and sorry to bring this up. It is kind of educational though. I’m just a little frustrated . I got this lens to test and actually shoot the darn thing plus I have 3 Rokinon lenses 35/85 1.4 plus the 35 2.8 plus I got a Batis 18mm on the way. Good news I got a all day industrial shoot on Tuesday and looks like the shot list I will use everything in my bag.

Let’s move on PLEASE

Well since we're talking about the 135 GM and performance (at least I think that was the point) here's a quick "test" I did, as this lens needs to be able to handle autofocus with action shots as well as portraits for me to justify the cost. So I challenged my daughter to twist around and swing as fast as she wanted, and wanted to see how the A7R3 could handle keeping eye-AF locked, and it was getting dark. This wasn't a "one lucky" shot, about everything where she was facing me the camera/lens kept up.

That’s tough action on a camera is when the subject is coming at you. It certainly where the fail point will be over going side to side. I’m even thinking this could be the hardest on AF because it actually going back and forth is racking the focus the hardest. Good work

Thanks! Although to be honest the camera/lens combo made this easier than I expected. You have the Big Bronco test, I have the "almost dark daughter swinging autofocus test".

For some reason, I'm not falling in love with the rendering of this lens. I don't find it as magical as say the Sony Zeiss 135mm f1.8 or the Zeiss 135mm f2 Apo. People will say I'm crazy, but it's a matter of taste. It's a shame that Sony have not refreshed the 135mm f1.8 A mount. In my opinion, it's the best lens they've made, rendering wise.

It’d be a good sports lens it seems,if the venue required it. Otherwise I dont see anything overly special about it. Not compared to other lens’ samples I’ve seen on here. Just my pov.

How do you guys feel about the Sigma 135/1.8 Art's rendering? Not magical enough?
I posted side-by-side comparisons in a blind test starting here and many thought their rendering was similar.

I was never a fan of the Zeiss 135/1.8's rendering for its high axial CA wide open but that does not seem to bother many photographers. My absolute favorite is the Zeiss 135/2 APO's rendering but I would not be surprised if the 135 GM comes very close to it. I'm thinking of renting the Milvus version and compare them side by side.
