A few shots testing out the z6 w/ 24-70/4. Moving over from a Sony A7rII. Love the handling of the camera - very refined. Not liking the pp steps needed with lightroom.

You might want to try Capture One software. I switched from Lightroom to C1, never looked back. With C1 your starting point from RAW is not dull and neutral as is the case with Lightroom.
was shooting 35/85 today at a party
and put on the new 24 just to "check the box" and test it out a bit.
nothing special
cheers and have a GREAT weekend everyone!
Looks pretty good. What do you think looking at the RAWs?

Haha excellent summary. I’m not a zoom guy at all but keep thinking about the 24-75 instead of the primes and keep CV primes for character. How does the 24-70 feel on the camera? As heavy and big as it looks?

I think Nikon is using the same sauce on all of these new primes.
personally,
5 * being the best a 1.8 prime could be....
I'd rank them:
85 - 5 *
24 - 5 *
50 - 4.75 *
35 - 4.5 *
and for a 2.8 pro zoom?
the 24-70 2.8S - 6*, even though we can only go up to 5 lol, it's that good.

Looking at the specs of the Z 24-70 f2.8 S lens, Nikon probably uses more expensive materials and coating processing for glass elements. From some of Lance's and others' images, I felt this lens renders beautiful colors in addition to its sharpness and resolution. I would even venture out to say that this zoom lens renders color better than the new f1.8 primes, in general. But I don't own one yet so I am only speculating. Perhaps, Lance can comment on some of the attributes of the zoom relative to these primes.

I've not done back to back tests, nor do I think I will as it isn't something I do. There is no doubt the 24-70 f2.8S is the top dog as far as a zoom in this range is concerned but I do think the primes could have the edge once stopped down, but I have rarely ever used the primes stopped down, so my opinion is a little limited. The issue is that the difference seems to be so small that I don't notice that there is a marked enough difference to warrant using the prime over the zoom when stopping down. This is a real job for pixel peeping at 100%+ in a very controlled test as the whole Z lens system is so good that we are splitting hairs and as we know it's not just about sharpness, but overall IQ.
When I went from the 24-70 f2.8E VR to the 24-70 f2.8S, the difference was immediately evident that the Z lens was better, no real need to pixel peep - as great as the 24-70 f2.8E VR was. Lenses that are clearly better show themselves up without the real need to overly pixel peep, IMO. They generally show better clarity, or sharpness, or bokeh and/or overall IQ, or all of these attributes, that is self evident just in the look. The difference between the Z mount primes and the Z mount zooms is very minor at best because they're are all so damn good. The differences are very subtle, like slightly better bokeh or slightly less CA but even then that is aperture dependent, distance to subject dependent and light dependent. There are times that the 24-70 f2.8S seems to have better bokeh than say the 35 f1.8S at a given aperture, but then at other times it is the reverse. This is why I now just use the primes mainly for wider open shooting and the zoom for most other applications.
