Mark of a good lens, the 75 1.5 never seems to come up on the buy&sell forum! I should know, I keep checking :-)

This is so true. Good one Rob.

In some other reviews I noticed that you need to "adjust focus" when shooting at distances beyond 3m. I've never heard of focus shift suddenly kicking in after 3m. Can anyone who's used this lens with a rangefinder for focusing clarify that claim?

The 75 APO seems to have blistering micro-contrast, higher contrast bokeh and sharpness from WO making for a harsher rendering portrait wise, while the CV 75 takes a bit to full sharpen up especially a little softer at near/mid distance, which is favorable for portraits and generally makes for an aesthetic I prefer.

The CV 75/2.5 LTM has a bit of this magic, IMO. It was a great portrait lens at 2.5, sharpened up nicely by f/4 but it was never harsh. I had it in silver and it matched a 35/2.5 LTM I had at the time. Sold them both as a set and still regret it. I should learn to never sell lenses I like, especially CV...

I've not found any focus shift with this lens. (infinity or close-distance). I mainly use it on the M10.

p.20 #5 · Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5 Nokton Review

Currently I have the Voigtlander 15mm f4.5 Heller III, 21mm f3.5 Color Skopar and just got, for the 2nd time, the 40mm f1.2 Nokton. I shoot with a Sony A7RIII and am finding that I am just not using the 15mm lens, and thinking of selling it and getting a longer FL lens. The 75 f1.5 Nokton is very interesting to me, as the Batis 85mm is my most used AF lens, but is seems a E mount version is no where in sight. Not having a VM lens there are some things I have questions about:

1. I understand the VM version does not have any electronic contacts and EXIF data is not transferred, but do the Sony auto magnify/peaking features still work automatically with the A7RIII? If not I assume they could be mapped to a button, but any other focusing issues using a VM style of lens?

2. Most adapters seem to be dumb, that is without glass or contacts, and the only one I could find from Voigtlander was a close focus VM to Sony E one at $309, which is way more than I want to spend for just a dumb adapter. Would appreciate other recommendations.

3. A couple posts is this thread mentioned the Techart adapter that brings AF to this lens on Sony bodies. It is $379 and I might consider this over the dumb adapter, but how good is the AF with this? Does the Eye AF work?

Thank you,

I'll let others inform about the Techart. A reliable and well made factory OEM or Novoflex one would be a huge boost for manual focus users.

1. All the focus aids work, as they do on all dumb adapters, but no EXIF or info is transferred.

2. I use and (for once) am entirely happy with the M>E Novoflex on Phillip Reeve's recommendation. This one:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/737896-REG/Novoflex_NEX_LEM_Adapter_for_Leica_M.html
There is a range of opinion on adapters and many get excellent results from cheaper ones. I'm too poor not to buy the best, and German gear is just that - the best.

The longer we go without word on an E vsn of the 75/1.5, the more likely a longer portrait focal length Voigtlander for Sony becomes, likely something special. Feb is a release month for Cosina, it's a way off still.

I think it was a wise decision by Cosina to make this 75/1.5 one, it's very different from the Leica offerings but more of an acquired taste, special colour and distinctive bokeh in a modern package with vintage overtones (sounds like a wine buff). Of course, the Leica reviewers don't like that it is not as sharp WO as their 75s.

On that front, the (2005) 75/2 M APO has a great reputation, but in an excellent comparison against the new SL 75/2, you can see the differences the modern lenses make.

https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2018/05/leica-apo-summicron-sl-75mm-f-2-asph-review/
(down the page)

Looking up the 50/2 APO from CV, its MTF is a virtual copy of the SL 75/2 APO, a little behind on axis at f2 but better corners, as good at f4 as the SL at f5.6; both were 20% stronger on axis compared to the M-APO 75/2. So that maybe raises the prospect of a 75/2 APO-Lanthar, though they would do better with an 85/2, 20mm on from the 65/2, and different from Leica, and new users are familiar - 85mm is a great all round FL.

75/1.5 review (most others are just Leica comparators) :

Thank you for your post and linking some reviews. I had already read the Phillip Reeve review and in reading the one at macfilos they had a link to an excellent review by Patrick Leong at Finding Range, here is the link:

http://findingrange.com/2019/09/24/voigtlander-nokton-75mm-f1-5-aspherical-lens-review/

I liked this review because he shot a lot of photos at f/1.5, including street scenes and portraits, plus some at f/8 that I could have taken myself. For me, the sharpness at f1.5 is just fine. I like this lens, but I am going to wait until February of next year to see if CV announces an E mount, as I really don't need the lens until then. My wife, who is from Thailand, and I are planning to spend 2-1/2 months in Thailand, we plan on leaving mid-February, hopefully with having had Covid vaccine shots, and staying thru the Songkran festivals in late April. This 75mm f1.5 lens would work perfect with my A7RIII as a 3 lens CV kit with the 21mm f/3.5 and 40mm f/1.2 Nokton. This will pair up with my Olympus EM1 MkIII and 12-40 and 40-150 f/2.8 Pro lenses giving me a (FF) 24mm to 300mm f2.8 range and a waterproof setup, perfect for the dousing that comes with the Songkran festivals. Plus I will carry the very small Laowa 7.5mm f/2, so 2 bodies and 6 lenses, that all fits nicely in a Mindshift bag that weighs in just under 6kg total.

I took some round the place images with mine and even in-camera the bokeh and especially the colour is superb, so that's the short telephoto portrait niche filled very emphatically, at 100mm it's the CY 100/3.5, and they are quite similar in several respects. I now hope for a wide angle next - 28mm.

Images look like nothing else and handling and low light focus acquisition are really nice. Sharpness yes, excellent for my standards, and as most tests are done on Leica, we have IBIS to help do better. So many of the CVs are 'sleepers' people will discover in years to come - one of those things with so many lenses being released each year.

Thanks for the link too.

That’s a great combo... if I’m just heading downtown for a few hours, I’ll bring the VM 75/1.5 and 28/2 Ultron for my Z7. Otherwise, for a weekend in the country trip, I like the VM 21/1.4, 40/1.2 and 75/1.5 trio very much.

p.20 #11 · Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5 Nokton Review

Reading Patrick's review (link above) he says this:

'Often times, it can look like you produced a soft image but if you zoom in it at 100%, you’ll notice that what you focused on is sharp. Take for instance, the picture below. I originally thought I was off a bit in terms of focus but when I zoomed in at 100%, I saw that the eye area that I focused on is sharp.'

I want to say this is a Cosina Voigtlander characteristic. I also have their sharpest 50mm lens, the spectacular 50/2 APO, and it never has that intrusive look that so many modern lenses inflict on the viewing eye, they seem to shout about their sharpness. Since this is an issue these days - that the 75/1.5 is not sharp 'enough' - take a quick look at this one:

It's an art form Cosina has perfected quietly in the background, far away from the hubbub of lens review-induced notions of sharpness as a linear scale - more is always better for them. But it's a portrait lens! By the way, the combo of a7rII plus this lens and adapter is right on 1000 grams all up.

What you are seeing in that photo is the very narrow DOF that a f/1.5 lens can bring, which probably less than 3 inches at this distance. Maybe he is a bit front focused too, as the rear eye and left ear are OOF, but the left hand in more in focus and if his focus was on the front eye, the rear eye should have been a bit sharper. But this is why all my 85mm f1.4 portraits this close are usually taken at f/2 to f/2.4, I want both eyes in focus. Nonetheless, a great photo that shows just how sharp this lens can be wide open.

I find the Voigtlander 75/1.5 sharp wide open but at close distance there is visible SA which I don't mind for portraits.

It's optimized for mid-distance. I'd say after 1.5-2m, it performs great even wide open. There is a noticeable SA glow at close distances (<1m) but I find the overall look very pleasant. When I'm shooting close to MFD, I usually stop the lens down to f/2.

The Voigtlander 75/1.5 Nokton is a very sharp lens starting at f/2.4 at any distance.

I probably would buy this lens if I would not own the Summarit 90mm f/2.4. In combination with this lens, I would use it mostly at shorter distances, and at f/2 and larger apertures, i.e. where the glow and some CA tend to show up. Alternative choices without the glow and CA are expensive, unfortunately.

I would like to thank the contributors to this thread for turning me onto this great lens. I am seriously impressed how perfectly calibrated it ended up being on my M10-P. Between this and the VM 40/1.2 Nokton, my ZM lenses are starting to sweat on shelf.... Especially you, Mr. Tele-Tessar
