These were taken a week ago at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge here in New York City. I was surprised how busy the park was with rain showers and wind.
Nice, insightful series, Morris. I wonder if that "grip" with the beak is functional part of the normal routine or just a 'one off'. In all the years we had them at the old place, I don't remember seeing that, but I wasn't looking that closely.

I've seen that grip a few times in my photos and that of others. They are not the only birds that do that
