DanielJStein: I liked the little light reflections in the ice and in the water in that picture. I am glad you liked them as well. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
JohanEickmeyer: It was a crisp day. Cold days are good for crisp. Glad you like the 3D feel. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Long time since I have seen your work. I rarely frequent this forum, but your work continues to be outstanding.
Of the three I lean towards the middle image (possibly with a bit off the bottom). Why? I love the water with this view, shutter speed.
Stay warm my fellow Scott.

It has been a while. I often think about posting in photocritique to tune my images - the feedback is more intense there. Nice to hear from you.
I agree the middle image needs some trimming off the bottom. I had some problem with my lens where it was showing a dark spot above f5.6. It was hard to check out in the cold. I looked the other day and had the same reaction. Thanks for pointing it out.

Lovely set Scott. Really enjoyed viewing it. Loved the light in the first image but I liked the composition in the second more. Great series nonetheless.
Cheers,

I struggled between the first and 2nd. HIgher causes longer leading lines and lower emphasizes the water. it feels like I could have even gone lower but I was a little worried about swimming.

-30C should be experienced at least once every winter. The light is usually otherwordly if it's a clear day. Those rounded edges of the snow cover along the riverside look delicious. It's worth noting that the mountain background still dominates the view even with such wide lens. Huge scene.

-30 makes you feel alive. 1 false step and you are in trouble. Glad you like the riverside. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

It is good advice to be careful near water in those conditions. Indeed, one step is the difference between life and death.
I have spent countless full days in the cold during the last decade. Always to the point where the cameras just get stuck and cannot be operated anymore
-35C is the limit for most rear LCD-screens. Crystals freeze up and nothing can be seen. Time to switch to the OLED EVF or OVF right there.

I have had lots of problems with lcd on a7r, a7r2 lcd screen bricking after 15 minutes at -35. The flip out feature and small body likely contribute. I think that flip out is the bigger driver than the DSLR vs mirrorless. The size of the body matters too. And I have not yet hit -35c on r5 (maybe I did and just did not notice 2 weeks ago but I have been out for hours at -30) yet but I am optimistic that the insolation of the R5 (remember the overheating drama for 8k) will let the R5 do better. But my back up plan is a chemical hand warmer elastic banded to my lens and a camera blanket over top and don't flip out.
I have never had a failure on my 5dsr or 5diii or 7d even at -40c for hours with lcd. But none of these are flip outs.

Ya. Big DSLR bodies are absolutely nice out there sometimes. Although, I have experienced LCD freeze once with K-1. It has that funky multiangle flipout-screen.

Beautiful images Scott. Number 1 my fave but love the look of the river in #2. All just draw the eye all around the images, well done! In Texas we just suffered a near zero temp. winter storm, I can't imagine what -30 feels like!

I hope all is well for you in Texas. I have 2 daughters without water in Houston - accountant and architect. And a son - accounting student at Baylor in Waco. They were without water, power and heat for 5 days but they are good now. Well the girls will be good (water) when the plummer arrives on Tuesday. My youngest went to Tampa to avoid the cold and is returning with 100 1/2" and 100 3/4" couplings to lure her plummer for prompt service.
We are set up in Calgary for -40c. Its the summer (rain or heat or forest fire smoke or grass fires) that challenges us.
Glad you like 1. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
