While the hood does look odd, I also find it very effective. I've noticed less dust or other contaminants getting on the front element in breezy or windy conditions.

The hood is very practical. It does it´s work also when camera is the bag - hood is so good protection that I never use lens cap.

Indeed it is a very practical hood also keeping any rain off quite effectively more than an open design.

My turn :-) I bought one the other day particularly for travel/environmental portraits with my A7V. So far I love it---AF is super fast and accurate, love the rendering (colour/contrast) and the bokeh as well. Plus it's on sale! Since it is 'only f/2.5' I originally plan to apply the excellent Adobe lens blur filter on full body shots. However, so far I don't see the need to apply the fake blur.

Nice images. The Well is a great location for a photo shoot!

Thanks very much araudan. It's a bit cold though, I forgot it's an outdoor mall with some indoor cover. Nevertheless, I totally agree---it's a great location!!

Just have to ask. Has anyone taken delivery of the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.8 FE EVO lens yet? Mine just arrived today and while bigger than my FE 40mm f/2.5 G its sale price of $315 (USD) convinced me to give it a try. It’s an APO design and I’ve heard great things about it. At ~ 350 grams it’s not to big and heavy. Let me know if you hacpve any results. Thank you.

Good thing you mentioned. I was really tempted to get the Viltrox at B&H. However, I already own not just the 40G but the equally capable albeit heavy Sigma 35/1.4 DG HSM Art which I just used in a few boudoir shoots. Love to show some samples but I don't want Fred to ban me . So buying the Viltrox will be overkill for sure. In my case though---I'll make a trade----my two lenses for a brand new Sigma 35/1.4 ART II.

Well I asked because this thread seems to be focused on smaller and less expensive lenses than the Sony GM or Sigma Art top of the pyramid lenses. The 40/2.5 G is not a cheap lens but is typically about 1/2 the price of the GM. The Viltrox EVO is about 1/2 the price of the FE 40/2.5 G or 4 times cheaper than the GM.

Congrats with your new lens!! I read the smashing reviews....looking forward to see some pics.

I’m on the fence between this and the Sigma 35mm f/2. How does this new Viltrox compare to the 40mm Sony G? I currently have the 40mm, but I prefer the 35mm focal length.

The new and very interesting Viltrox 35/1.8 EVO APO deserves a separate thread. Anyone interested won't find their way to this thread.
@swldstn@ You are one of very few already having the lens. I suggest you start a thread and let the images and opinions populate it!

Third party lenses are wellcome. However, I do not really see the Viltrox as direct alternative to 40G. I like 40G very much but I feel it is best when used slightly stopped down - Viltrox has sure much more pleasing bokeh.
For portraits with soft backgrounds I much prefer using 35GM.
Anyways, this is really very subjective. Most modern lenses are "good enough". Just buy what you like and can afford

I am still happy with the 40G. Its a good travel companion and is pretty much default lens if I want to keep shooting if its raining. Not that I get to do that a whole lot...
These are some recent shots from my trip. A lot of them I have a pro mist filter on...I also don't really care if I had to use APS-C mode to get a bit more reach when I was framing....
