Dan, i agree with you. If i remember i missed my 70-200 for this shoot. The 50 was a little too short. But the crop is possible with the many pixels of the d810.

Been there, done that! :-)
I usually carry a pretty long lens in the set I use for landscape, but sometimes I have more limited resources at hand. For example, in the backcountry I often forego the longest and shortest of my lenses. And I occasionally regret it.
I think you could still get a pretty fine quality image from the crop, and to my eyes that lovely sky gradient glows anpops out a bit more without the darker stuff at the edges.
