How are you finding the 40/2 Ray? Tried it much at night yet?
That's where I believe it 'sings' for its price point.

Have had this for quite awhile now Colin. Overall I like it though I dno't use it as much as when I first got it, it's somewhat old school in performance but very nice for a small compact large aperture lens. (in today's zoom world anything f2.0 or larger I consider large aperture). I have not tried it out at night yet (don't shoot much at night), now you have me intrigued.
I like to see smallish large aperture primes for the Z, unfortunately all the other smaller/pancake are 2.8 or smaller.
A quick PSA for anyone looking for a lens hood for the Z 40/2. The HS-11 works like a charm, is reasonably compact and mounts quickly. (On a side note the HN-2 works well on the Z 28/2.8).

.
That's good to know.
I use the HN-2 on my 40/2 and the HN-1 on the 28/2.8

That must be great on a Z9.
I pair it with a Z6ii for night time walk about shooting. The lens delivers a lot for it price point.
Have you run that Oban image through a de-noise routine? The one in LR is pretty amazing
Colin
I have not. I’m older school and tend to like the gritty look in low light photos—it reminds me of days long ago I had to use fast glass wide open and push Tri-X to 800 🤣
I love this lens on my Z9, a great walk around combo.. the rendering of the Z40 f/2 often has a lovely glow across its aperture settings, which I have noticed on some of the samples people have posted here as well.
I just picked one of these up. I'm thinking of selling my 50/1.8 and using this when I want to travel lighter, as I'm using the Sony 50/1.2GM when I want the ultimate quality and look at 50mm. I think 40mm is a more useful everyday general purpose focal length for a single or dual lens lightweight setup.
I tried a used copy at my local store a few days ago, and it was good at medium distances, but atrocious closer up (not even at MFD), but the new copy I got today looks to be significantly better close up, and while it has some spherical aberration at very close focus distances wide open, even going to like a 0.5m focus distance sharpens it up fairly nicely, and it's pretty good by f/2.8 close up. At medium distances it's reasonably sharp across almost the entire frame wide open, with only the extreme corners being a bit soft. Stopped down it's quite good. It's not going to match the best lenses around (and the 50/1.8 is better), but I think it's a very nice performer given the price.
Yes, the Z 40 f/2 is not about razor sharpness like compared to the Z 50 f/1.8, (but if you pixel peep mine is quite good even at close distances) but it’s about a wonderful analogue style rendering and colours with potentially a gorgeous glow. I think the lens is great for street and town photography where it lends a bit of character. I also like for portraits where it can give a film like quality to the image. I still think image character rendering is best done at source, rather than trying to emulate in post. Glad you are enjoying it.

Exactly why it will be part of my prime kit for my upcoming trip to Italy (28/40/85 trio)
