I shot a music industry party the other evening on my Z9 using the 40mm f/2 as my main lens one it got busy (nice, light and able to get close up). A few samples below shot at crazy high ISO’s..
@f/2.5
@f/3.2
@f/2.0
@f2.2
It’s not as sharp as some of my other lenses but it has character and it’s super light

You did really well here. Images look very natural and take the viewer into the event. This lens is slowly winning people over now that the S-line euphoria has normalised.
I like the comparison to the “nifty fifty”. The 40mm f2 on a Z6 is an easily carried ‘compact’ full frame package. The f2 isolates the subject like the f1.8 50mm AF-D & G and at around the same price point, on sale. But the wider, 40mm is a little more versatile, and great for street photography. My second favorite lens for the Z after the 24-70 f4.
This lens is a paradigm shifter. It proves that good photography can be had without spending a fortune on expensive glass. Yes we all want sharp but the portability, rendering, color, bokeh of this lens truly is phenomenal for its price and weight. On my Zf, this lens would be the one if I could only have one. This is maybe the most dense lens Nikon has ever made. Paired with the very heavy but competent 105 1.4, or a 85 1.8S, you have a very interesting combination where the total weight is within reason.

I agree. It renders kind of like my Leica 50mm Lux ASPH - at 1/10th the cost!!
