Every year I enter notes in my calendar of goals for next year’s photo shoots. This year for my eagle photography, I wanted up close, in your face action detailing the aggression of these incredible raptors.
In November I hosted 3 weeks of photo workshops in Haines, Alaska for the Bald Eagles. I have been going to this location every year since 2009 and wanted to add a different look and feel to my eagle portfolio as I’ve photographed there so much over the years. I love the scenics with eagles but wanted to experiment with a different look and feel.
This year, I’ve been shooting Nikon SLRs and Sony mirrorless. It’s been a lot of fun going back and forth and figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of each. For this genre, I took the Sony A1 for its fast frame rate, and high mega-pixel sensor to enable me to crop in a bit and get the feel I was looking for.
In addition to the stills, I shot some slow-motion video (120fps) with the Sony A1 in S&Q mode. It was a lot of fun when the light was low and there was lots of eagle action. You can see the slow-motion video here:
These are a delight to view and quite a change from the wonderful environmental portraits you posted a while back. The video is fascinating and showing with all the behavior you captured. Seeing the eagle react to having it's salmon stolen was very special as it looked at down at the empty gravel where the salmon had just been. The seen with the heavy snow is very attractive and quite a contrast to my last eagle shoot here in NYC in August when it was 95f and humid. You probably win on comfort as good clothing will keep you warm yet there is just so much one can take off.
Matt those shots are amazing, and the video is top drawer. Love the slow notice of the eagles flipping onto their back to get their talons up. It's one thing to see it in a photo but a whole other look in slomo
Jaw dropping images, Matt, all of them! I love the video as well. The shooting circumstances seemed to be way better than at Conowingo Dam in a lot of ways. Voted!
Spectacular photos. You have wonderfully captured the eagles' majesty and strength. Anyone who has witnessed them in action can see why they were chosen to represent the USA.

Excellent imagery, Matt. I also checked out the slow mo video and it is awesome. Really enjoyed meeting you out there.

Dan, It was great to meet you as well and hang out. After you left, we got a lot of snow (about 4 feet the week of Thanksgiving). Made some nice snowy scenes, but was tough getting around too for everyone, including the birds.
