Was on a Trip to Japan and being Sakura got a chance to see beautiful Somei Yoshino trees in their full bloom. In one of the trees found this Brown eared bulbul jostling around..
Looks like a "LIPA hickory". LIPA whacks the canopy to clear wires and the water sprouts are the response. Super gnarly wood and the toughest to split. Pretty old and not that many left around, probably planted by the farmer to line the road or carriageway. Most switched to the crappy Norway Maple that are everywhere and grow (and die) faster (~70years).
That’s right off the road facing north in Southampton after 39 turns left into Montauk Highway

This looks like an absolute winner of a lens. I traded my f-mount 58mm f1.4G for 50mm and 85mm S lenses, which are both frankly stunning, but for some upcoming travel I think I'm better of ditching the 85mm for a zoom and the 24-120mm seems like the most useful range to have along in Japan.
This would leave me with 24mm and 50mm 1.8 S primes for indoors and lower light and the 24-120 f/4 for most other things. Neither local shop has one of these for me to try out on my Z6 at the moment, how does it balance out on smaller Z bodies when the barrel is extended? Anything to look out for if I do get a chance to try one out in terms of QC issues or build issues?
My alternative would probably be a 24-70 F4, since they can be had cheap enough I could hold onto the 85mm, but that extra reach seems so nice to have.

I find it fine on a Z5ii, it isn't a lightweight compact lens but its not overly large or unwieldy either.

It balances fine on a Z7 and Z5II. Its not a heavy lens, but a bit bulky with the hood attached.
My no 1 choice for travel. You might also throw in the cheap, small but nevertheless good Viltrox 14 4.0
Good addition to the 24-120 for travel.

The 24-120mm f4S is a fantastic zoom option.....and the close min focus is a nice touch too for versatility. That said, if you can buy that and keep your 85mm, that's what I'd do......they have different purposes of course. But then I'm a lens collector. If you truly just wanted to have 2-3 lenses in your bag, you can't go wrong with the 24-120 f4S being one of them.

I should ask.....will you miss your 58mm f1.4G? It's so unique and so unlike modern lenses....I don't see myself selling it anytime soon despite not using it as much as I should.

For sure! It's one of my favorite lenses across mounts and I hope I'll own it again one day!
The reason I made the trade was just a practical one. I could either spend $300 for the FTZII and adapt it, or take the trade for two beautiful lenses native to the mount and not only recoup my investment in the lens, but get additional value!
Took my 24-120 around my neighborhood a bit to get a feel for it. And play with the colors of Oregon spring.
What even is this lens? How did the engineers create an optic that looks so good wide open virtually across the entire zoom range and focuses quickly/accurately?
Sure, I’m very glad i have two primes for indoors and low light, but I don’t feel like there is much I can’t shoot with this lens and make great prints. A true accomplishment.
