Day 6 - Central Serengeti - Drive back to Arusha

1) Should I go to Masai Mara from Nairobi for at least 2 days ( Am i missing a lot if I don't go to Masai Mara, is there much better and scenic vs Serengeti ?)
2 Should I at least visit Amboseli for 2 days from Nairobi or Moshi - Tanzania.

Visiting the Mara in August would be great if you hope to see wildebeest crossing the Mara River, but otherwise it is the same ecosystem as the Serengeti so will be similar. I'd recommend adding more nights to the northern Serengeti if you're already there.

My main comment would be all the moving in your itinerary. One night in each location means you'll be travelling between camps/lodges more than actually going on game drives. You never really game drive "on the way" as there's always a bit of pressure to keep moving. Two nights is the absolute minimum I'd say for any one location and even that is too tight for me. Just my two cents. These are all incredible locations you're visiting, they deserve time to get settled and explore.

I agree that one day, half a day? in each area is not the way to do it. I would plan on 3 days at two areas rather than half a day at 6. My trips to africa were generally 3 locations at three days each.

In Northern Serengeti we will stay 2 nights in 1 place. This private Safaris are f... expensive, so I don't want to add more and more days. I have the feeling that this Safaris are way way overpriced

I'd recommend staying away from Tanzania for a while...two articles below. For me I thought the National Parks were terribly overpriced, and I have had better experiences elsewhere in southern Africa.

https://amp.theguardian.com/global-development/2024/apr/23/world-bank-suspends-tanzania-tourism-funding-after-claims-of-killings-and-evictions

“The World Bank is deeply concerned about the allegations of abuse and injustice related to the Resilient Natural Resources Management for Tourism and Growth (Regrow) project in Tanzania,” said a World Bank spokesperson.

“We have recently received information that suggests breaches of our policies in the implementation of the Regrow project. We have therefore decided to suspend further disbursement of funds with immediate effect.”

Tanzania was due to receive a further $50m, having already received $100m of the funding. Developments include building roads, viewing areas and visitor centres, and investing in wildlife monitoring and increased security.

The Guardian reported in September 2023 that the US-based thinktank the Oakland Institute had documented a range of abuses by Tanzanian rangers against villagers accused of encroaching on the national park, including the killing of cattle herders and fishers, the confiscation of livestock and the rape of women.

The Oakland Institute said that despite the World Bank announcing an investigation, the Tanzanian government moved forward in October with plans to redraw the boundaries of the national park, which would result in 21,000 people facing eviction.

As other have said, this sounds very hectic. Even if you had your own private helicopter it would still be hectic traveling to a new spot every day. This is more like a taxi ride-along than a safari and I don't think you'll be happy with it. I would do 2.5, 2.5, and 1 for your stay durations in any of the above locations.

I am not gonna stress about it. I will focus mostly on Kilimanjaro Climb which I have after Safari which for me Is more like extra activity before my climb
Big expectations can become big disappointments. I am not planning to take National Geographic award winning photos. It will be great to stay more days in some locations but I am not willing to spend more $$$ on that ( one extra day cost $1600 more - I better keep this money for go to Antarctica one day )

That cost seems very high to me. I just checked Serena Hotels at Amboseli are $130 a night, with game drives an extra $70 each. Try researching tented camps and lodges individually. I am sure that a day at $1,600 is over the top. I used a respected a African Wildlife company, I think my safaris cost $1,000 a day, all inclusive of 2 game drives a day, meals and transfers between lodges for 2 people. Also check what type of vehicle will be used for the game drives, open 4WD are best, avoid anyone who uses a mini bus type. If you are not interested in the wildlife but only climbing Kilimanjaro then I think you are asking on the wrong site.

I agree 100%.

This is your first trip to Africa. That is a once in a lifetime experience that you should enjoy fully. As an introduction to Africa look at it as you would a 101 course at University. A survey course so to speak. You cover a large area of a discipline at high level. This allows you to learn about how you relate to the subject matter, and what you would like to explore more deeply. That alone has value. Go with the flow. You will learn a lot with such a broad exposure to different areas.

Africa will be around. You will have opportunity to go back and dive deeper. You will also learn how to do it more affordably next time. If you pay attention you will learn a bit about yourself on the Kilimanjaro climb. Embrace that as well.

You are embarking on a new adventure. Embrace and enjoy every minute of it, even the long drives, discomforts, and annoyances you are sure to encounter on such a hectic scheduled trip.

We are all looking forward to your images, and stories from the trip. post some in real time when you have the right internet connections available.

You are correct. Once you are in Mara the move between these camps will be enjoyable (but rough roads make them tiring) and can be their own game drives. You will also see many fantastic landscapes as you travel.

If they are close then the problem of long transfers does not exist, the transfer will be like a game drive. I was thinking more like the trips I had done where we went to different ecosystems for each camp.

I love this thread! So much helpful information.

We're headed to Kenya this December, around Christmas. The dates might not be ideal, but it's when the family could travel. Any thoughts on this rough itinerary?

- 3 nights at Meru National Park (staying at Elsa's Kopje camp)

- 3 nights at Samburu National Reserve (staying at Soroi Larsen's Camp)

- 3 nights at the Maasai Mara: Naboisho Private Conservancy (staying at Encounter Mara Camp)

It's my first time in Africa, though a few family members have been to Botswana. Hopefully we can't go too wrong.

That looks like a great itinerary, especially if you are linking them together with puddle jumpers.

Mara in private conservancy is great, and I personally love Samburu. Elsa's in Meru is a beautiful lodge I heard; I do think that in Meru wildlife sighting might be a bit less dense than the other places, but it should be a great experience! Lovely trip it seems.

OK, I'm about 6 weeks out from my first African safari. I have a week local camping trip right before, so I'm trying to make sure I have everything now, so I'm not rushing around at the last minute trying to find things. It's a part family trip, part photo safari, and we are doing about three weeks, mostly in Kenya with a few days at Zanzibar at the end. We are splitting our time between the Chuyulu/Amboseli area, a Mara conservancy, and Lewa. It's my first trip, so I don't have any real target animals, I'm interested in about everything. (Well, I do have a few but they shouldn't be hard to find). Our camp in Chyulu has a photo blind at their waterhole so I will likely have some close encounters from the blind, mostly elephants and giraffes, maybe some impala and hyenas if I'm lucky. Lions, if I'm real lucky but those are mostly night visitors I think. All Safarilink air transfers between camps.

Here's what I have laid out to go, I was hoping those of you with more experience would be kind enough to let me know if you see any holes for things I'm missing or things I don't need. I greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Canon R5 x2 (one I own, renting a second)
Canon RF400/2.8
Canon 100-300/2.8 (also renting)
Canon RF 24-70/2.8
Canon RF 15-35/2.8 (I'm undecided if I want to take both of these wide angles, or just one? I do hope to get some landscape photos while I'm there, not to mention family photos)
Canon RF 1.4x
Canon RF 2.0x
LP-E6NH batteries x9
Canon battery wall charger
dual USB battery chargers x2
CF Express cards x10 (various sizes) (Don't plan to erase and reuse while on the trip)
Card reader and cables x2
4tb SSD drives for backups x4 (one photo primary and one secondary, one video primary and one backup)
Macbook Pro
Rocket Blaster and lens pen, and some lens cloths
a few filters (CPL, ND, maybe another, just in case)
DJI Pocket 3 camera with accessories and SD cards (Putting my 10yr old son in charge of vlogging, hopefully that keeps him involved)
Outlet adapters and converters, with chargers and cables

I think that is most of the relevant stuff.

Things I'm not taking and wondering if I will regret leaving home:
RF 100-500 and RF 70-200/F4

I think the 70-200 is redundant enough not to take. Same with the 100-500, but I have a nagging voice saying I should take it just in case of a failure with one of the other two long lenses. Should I bring it for extra insurance? I could sub it for either the 100-300 or 400 if one of them should break. Wouldn't be ideal, but better than making do with just one telephoto. I think packing space might be better allocated to taking the 100-500 and only one wide angle...

I'd appreciate any input you guys might have. I plan to carry on all of this gear between an Atlas backpack and a Thinktank Airport Roller.

We have our Kenya and Tanzania entry docs, and have our yellow fever shots scheduled. Just the final few details and off we go!

Sounds very exciting. You should expect to see lions in the Mara, absolutely. My last safari (2014), I shot almost exclusively with a rented 500 f4 and either my 5D3 or IDIV. I also took my 24-70 for camp or landscape, and possibly the 70-200 f 2.8, but the bulk of my images are with the 500. I'd consider swapping that rented 100-300 for your 100-500. If I were going and had to pick from your list: 400 f2.8, 100-500 and the 24-70 (and maybe the 70-200..) You don't need two wide zooms. At any rate, enjoy. Africa is a life changer!

This thread showed up on thr Sony forum, so I figured I'd get one more opinion here.

Spending 3 weeks driving around Namibia in July. Was planning to bring macro, 12-24, 70-200 2.8, and 200-600 6.3. Considering buying the new sony 300 2.8 because it is lightweight and compact. Would likely sub the 200-600 out for it or sacrifice the macro. Can use the 300 with 1.4x tc and 2x tc. Do you guys feel that there is any value to 300 2.8 for wildlife in Namibia? Will be in etosha for 6 nights and caprivi for 3.

Cduff,

You are going to have the trip of a lifetime and you are doing it first class. You will see everything on this trip except for maybe wild dogs, but you can see them in Lewa if you are real lucky. You have 3 different beautiful locations that are all unique in their own way and they showcase different wildlife. You'll see the rhinos and grevys in Lewa, elephants in Amboseli, and big cats in the Mara, on top of all the other species in each area. Your gear list looks great to me but I would leave the 24-70 at home. And ideally, I would bring a 14-35 instead of your 15-35 to lighten the load a bit. I would also bring 6 batteries max, you don't need more than that (unless you are 100% video shooter). Also, I've never had to use outlet adapters as all the camps I've been to have them there, so maybe just bring one in case you need it. You will find USB chargers inside most vehicles. Oh, and ditch the canon brick charger, you won't use it.

95% of your time there you'll have the 100-300 on one body and the 400 on the other. You can mix up the use of the TC's to play around, most of which will be adding the 1.4x to the 400 on occasion. The other 5% of the time you might be shooting a landscape or a nice tree with your wide angle. If you want to take the 100-500 for insurance that's fine as you can definitely justify the need for a backup on a trip like this. I would also recommend an RF 35 1.8 for family photos and night photos around camp.

You probably won't use any filters, but obviously you have to bring them because that's what we do right?

I'm sure you already know how, but make sure you are very comfortable with saving your camera settings to the memory card and loading it to your 2nd body. You'll obviously want to get them setup before you go, and then you might find yourself changing settings while there so you want to be able to quickly update the other body so they are identical.

You really couldn't piece together a better safari with the 3 locations you picked IMO. And, you are bringing the perfect gear kit so you are going to be in all the right places with your amazing gear to make for one killer safari. With that said, it will be up to you as to how much you want to "hustle". I know you will be there with family, but my suggestion is to hustle as much as you can so you don't miss anything. Hustling can lead to an exhausting 3 weeks but it will be totally worth it in the end. Good luck!!

Thank you! I've greatly benefited from your contributions in this thread. I'll certainly incorporate your advice when it comes time to pack my bags and hit the road. I will definitely be hustling as much as I can! I just really hope I can come back with some great photos.

Thanks again for the help! It's greatly appreciated. I will certainly report back when I am home.
