Hi everyone
I'm going to check out the 400/2.8 TC at my dealer today, and will need to be picking up a lens foot and a nez backpack (as my Kiboko 30L I think is going to be a bit small)
What lens foot would you recommend ? RRS, Kirk, Leofoto, Haoge ? Other ?
For a bag, I've seen the Mindshift 36L, anyone else have this one, other options ?

I like the bag that the lens comes in. It fits the body attached.
As for replacement feet, the only one I enjoy has been the Kirk LP-72 (without the Sure Grip coating).

I hear the bag it comes with is pretty good - that could be an option for me to travel with a smaller bag plus the dedicated one (just thinking both protection and practicality for when travel to Africa on safari
For the Kirk, interesting you prefer the standard version, is the sure grip coating a gimmick ?

I have flown worldwide to Japan, Costa Rica, etc. using the original Nikon bag. It works nicely!
Yes, I don't enjoy the Sure Grip coating because it has the tendency to start peeling, and it wasn't actually my favorite texture anyway. The one without it is just an anodized metal finish which has no issues. Anyway, they upcharge for the one with coating (I have now owned both versions).

Your Kiboko 30L will easily carry the 400mm 2.8TC with the body attached. Here's a picture of mine inside of my Kiboko 22L.

You won't go wrong with the 400 f2.8TC, it is a spectacular lens that just wants to be used.
I happen to use the Backlight 36L because I want to carry other gear with me. I shoot more than wildlife, so I want to have my wider zooms and primes along for the ride. In order to pack the lens with the camera and hood together in shooting position, you will need to buy a shorter replacement hood. Zemlin makes a hood that is half the length of the standard hood, and this substantially reduces the overall length of the kit. As Robert stated, I believe that this same set up will fit in your Kiboko bag. While I like the Kiboko, I find the straps to be a bit too flimsy and prefer a rear-entry system. I also use F-Stop Gear bags, but I do not like the way the 400TC packs into that bag.
See attached for how I pack my bag.
regards,
bruce

Thanks
Love the setup
I’d usually be traveling with the 400, 70-200, 24-70 and a TC. Maybe a 50/1.2

I forgot to mention a second body :-/
Right now I’ve been borrowing my ex Z6 II, but I’m thinking of getting a used Z8 or Z6 III

With the 22L I travel with the 400mm 2.8TC, 70-200mm 2.8, 1.4x TC, Z9 and Z8. So with the 30L you should be able to accommodate your additional lens.

Thanks... If your 24-70 is an f2.8, you may not be able to squeeze in the 50 f1.2, as that's a given lens too. In addition, your back won't love you.
My typical kit is the Z9 attached to 400TC w/ medium Zemlin hood in shooting position. If need be, I can also attach the external Z1.4x and it still fits on one side. The other side has a Z8, 24-120, and 100-400. This leaves a one spot open for any number of things. I have a Voigtlander 15mm f4.5, so if I need an ultra wide, it fits in there. Alternatively, I have a Leica M10 w/ 35mm f2 summicron, and that will fit in that extra spot. Batteries and filters are in a pouch that fits were some might put a water bottle. Finally, I've put the 36L in the overhead bins of planes, so that should not be an issue if you travel.

Agree - I always take a fast prime but rarely use it on safari. I am going to NY Wednesday so think need a trip to B&H to check some options. Picked up the 400/2.8 today. Tested at the dealer, what an amazing lens...

Congrats! You're going to love it... I've taken some of my favorite photos (like the one below) with the 400TC as it has wonderful rendering, falloff and micro contrast.

I wanted to use the 400TC + 2x today, so I started with that on. But first thing in the morning I was greeted with 4 loons which is a first for me. I couldn't fit them all in frame, so I removed the TC and then left it off all session.
I should have put it back on, because I'm really addicted to these zoomed in shots of the little fish's faces in their final seconds.

I stuck to my guns with the 2x today. I think the pics are much higher quality, although the actually photography is pretty meh due to it being ridiculously cloudy most of the day
Hopefully next time I go will be the charm. I found a really good AF system this time around, and probably the 1.4x will be better next time.
