Congratulations to Peter Figen for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners
We lost the mother of the great mother/daughter band The Judds today. This photo was for the cover of Frets Magazine back in their heyday - the late 1980's, shot backstage at Caesar's Palace. Weirdly, Carl Perkins, Mr. Blue Suede Shoes himself, was the opener and I shot him for Guitar Player during the same session.
Thanks J.R. They had great same family harmonies and that late 80's radio ready Nashville thing going on. Some pretty good songs too. Curb Records from what I remember. Same label as Lyle.

Thanks Parul. It's still very upsetting when people you have photographed die.
Peter, it would be more upsetting if you had never taken this image. Now we have something to look at and remember. Take some comfort in knowing that you did a good thing for a lot of other people.

Yeah, I know that. After having done this for several decades now, there are more and more people that I've photographed who are gone now. It's always both shocking and weird. Keith Emerson, Townes Van Zandt, Maurice White, Alan Holdsworth, Doc Watson, George Harrison, Willie Dixon, Guy Clark and Armand Hammer all come to mind.

Nice Peter. One light and reflector? Llke the way you turned their faces slightly toward your key light and great use of color. Shot with an RB?
You've got a good eye there. I think there were two lights - a medium Chimera with a reflector on them and probably a bare head on the background for some separation. I don't remember if this was on an RB67 or an RZ67. Certainly the back was an RB back as you can tell from their distinct corners but I often used the RB backs with the adapter on the RZ, especially when shooting black and white as I always thought the rebate edges on the RB backs looked better in a black and white print, plus the RZ frame was exactly one millimeter longer than the RB and I'd have to file out another Beseler film holder for those.
There was a case where you couldn't tell who was the daughter and who was the mother. "Mrs. Judd...I thought you were Dale" (got to be old to remember that one)

Well, if you were right next to them you could tell. Naomi had loads more makeup than Wynona. But you're right, many were confused as to who was who.
Peter, beautiful image. Very well composed. Definitely a magazine quality image. I love the colors, they go ell together. And man, that's a lot of red hair!!!
