I posted a few of these images along with others all in color a few days ago. The post sparked a wonderful conversation about color and light, and all that is photography. I learned much from that conversation, but I learned something deeper about myself—I had failed to present my work as I envisioned it, I did not show my extraordinary subject Nicole as I saw her and wanted to present her in my work—my art.
I allowed myself to be steered by what I imagined others would want to see, and then presented a vision of Nicole which wasn’t my own. So here now is what should have been my post in the first place, excluding a few of the other images, and including a few new ones, all in B&W. And thank you to everyone who participated in the illuminating discussion regarding the previous post. As always C&C is greatly appreciated. Derek
Derek - I think these are really nice. You've captured what certainly seems to be her personality and done it very well. I especially like the direct sun in the second image and how you held the delicate highlight detail. And while I love the first image, I keep wondering if a small amount of Low Amount High Radius USM might pop that one up a bit - something like 15-20 amount and 85 for the radius and zero threshold, but painted in selectively.

Thank you very much Peter. I am thinking you are right.
Derek, sometimes the "lightbulb" above our head doesn't come on right away!
I am REALLY liking these in B&W.
I believe I posted some of my ideas about this woman in B&W. I think you proved my theory here.
I always TRY to pre-visualize what I am about to photograph. Many times when I look at the file..it is crap! And sometimes, as above, an alternative process has me adjusting the frame and liking it!
My "trash can" is always full!!!!
Great work here Derek!!

Nice restraint with this series. It's hard to do simple well - number 1 is wonderful! I've read some people trash the Batis 1.8/85 as being too clinical, but this series proves otherwise.

Beautifully executed set of portraits. That’s a great lesson to remember, I’m constantly struggling with it myself, stick to what you want to show through your images!
