I am wondering the same as I've been debating between this and 150-500 lens. I've used the 150-500 multiple times and it's a great lens but I think this would be a better lens for travel.

I wonder why it is not more popular.
Maybe an explanation : it has been released way after the Sony and after the Sigma.
If Sony and Sigma owners are happy with the results they get with their gear, why would they change for the latest product, even to get the additional 50mm to 100mm focal range ?
Also, in some areas (at least where I live in Europe), the 2nd hand market is not as dynamic as in US, so if you want to trade something, you need to factor in a significative depreciation which - in the end - would require putting an additional amount of money to buy the replacement lens.
I am a 100-400 Sigma owner and, while I would be happy to get a 2 lens kit with my 16-35/4 zoom, I am more interested by the rumored 70-200 f4 Sony zoom lens than the 50-400 Tammy. This, as my 2nd main criteria (after image quality) is foot print (size & weight).

Good observation.
I used Sigma long time ago but other than the size and weight, I wasn't a big fan of the IQ. Tamron 50-400 is definitely an interesting lens to pair with 16-35 and two lens solution. But since I also have 35-150, I am leaning more towards the 150-500.

This lens is simply great for landscape photographers! I have so much fun just with the Sony 16-35 PZ and the Tamron 50-400, and the image quality is awesome!
Mads Peter Iversen now is a fan, too, and Michael Shainblum also recommends it.

I'm renting one at the moment. I'm pretty impressed though I haven't tried any of the alternatives from Sigma or Sony. Eye-AF works well though this gator didn't pose much of a challenge in that department. Taken today at Brazos Bend State Park.

I bought this lens today (at a Yodobashi camera store, for 150,000 yen or roughly US$ 1,000) and spent time shooting, first some street pictures in Ueno park at 400 mm, then art in a somewhat poor light. Overall, I am pleased with the performance.
