Was trying pre capture release. Was looking at the bird and clicked the shutter after the bird did this. Camera captured the whole sequence of opening and closing the beak!

Z7II has top LCD setup options, auto or manual with 3 brightness options, if I remember correctly.
I can't find any set up on Z8, am I overlooking it?
I've never see a setting for that on the Z8/Z9. Nikon calls it the "control panel". Searching through the online manuals reveals no settings to change.

Not a big deal, but I like more intensity when I wear sunglasses.
Thanks for confirming it!
I just remembered I should have put this post here in the Z8/Z9 thread as the Z8 is more "on topic" these days, rather than where I originally placed it over on the Z 800mm PF thread. I put this post there as I took a few shots with the 800 + 1.4x TC and thought it might be of interest in that thread.
Anyway, some Z8 shots and the first with the 800 PF + 1.4x TC
1) A Gannet a fair way off shore and hence the use of the 1.4x TC.
Z8 + Z 800 f6.3 PF + Z 1.4x TC, 1/2000s f/10.0 at 1120.0mm iso1000 - 100% crop
2) Rock Warbler - reasonably uncommon
Z8 + Z 800 f6.3 PF, 1/800s f/6.3 at 800.0mm iso1600
3) A very rare Chestnut-rumped Heathwren - my first sighting!
Z8 + Z 800 f6.3 PF, 1/800s f/8.0 at 800.0mm iso4500
4) New Holland Honeyeater
Z8 + Z 800 f6.3 PF, 1/160s f/6.3 at 800.0mm iso450
5) White-necked Heron with worm (and twig)
Z8 + Z 800 f6.3 PF, 1/160s f/6.3 at 800.0mm iso800

it seem that there are those struggling with the Z8. but here, i can see, as usual, clearly you are not. but with those they place the blame on the tool mostly
First outing with the Z8. I got my best Scissortail shots yet. The autofocus is light years ahead of my Z6 for this, but it doesn't perform miracles. I need a lot more practice. My panning skills need to improve to help the autofocus. There's still a lot of skill needed to shoot these little guys as they dart in an out of the flower field.
