I don't know if this is the case for other stores or not, but my LCS does not require an actual cash deposit to reserve a lens. So when they do get a batch of expensive lenses, most people aren't ready to buy when it comes down to it, and the list gets a lot shorter real quick. There were 20+ people ahead of me on the wait list, a batch of 3-4 lenses arrived and I got one of them. I was originally told not to expect it until sometime in 2024 based on the wait list size.
It does look like a fairly large shipment of 800 PFs hit North America recently though, great news.

They're definitely becoming more available. I decided not to wait for a 600TC and picked up a lightly used 800pf from my dealer. The announcement of the 180-600 means my 600TC order may never be realized. It's nice to have options and I hope Nikon keeps adding more of them!

I passed on the 600 TC as well. It's almost a KG heavier than the 800PF, physically larger, and 600mm isn't enough for me a lot of the time with a MFD over 14ft. I'd be using it 99% of the time with the TC engaged anyway so it just didn't make as much sense. For birds or smaller subjects I think the 800 PF is the better option. For larger animals, sports, etc. a case for the 600/4 TC is a lot easier to make and the flexibility of the TC would be much more useful.
The 800PF is also excellent with a 1.4TC, from what I have seen anyway, slightly better than stacking 1.4 TCs on the 600/4 or using a 2X to get to a similar focal length of 1000mm+.
I'm also getting the 180-600 which will give me 600mm with half the MFD, better magnification, and obviously the flexibility of a zoom. It'll be the lens I travel with as well when needed. As you say - it's really nice to have these options
