We were with a guide from Silver Salmon Creek Lodge, and he got us crazy close to the bears. Sometimes within 25-30 ft.! The guides there are experienced and know the bears that frequent the area, and we were in a group of about 8 photographers.
Actually, we were most concerned about the little cubs as they were curious and came a bit toward us, so our guide had us back up a few feet. The cubs then turned and scampered back to mom, who was concentrating on finding clams.

Thanks John and Bruce for the nice comments. Bruce, it was the experience of a lifetime for me. I fell in love with Alaska, and the bear photography was done in a small group with a guide from Silver Salmon Creek Lodge.
