If true, then Sony's mind is not very sound

Q3 got backlash for adding a tilt screen that destroyed the slim "lines" of the camera and making it bulkier than Q2 and Q1, but it's selling so good that wait list is like 10 years (exaggeration, but it's long).

Sony on the other hand, did not put a proper EVF and tilt screen in A7cR. While they are also enjoying a backlash, will its sale match the Q3?

Not sure if this was already mentioned but the A7C II camera's mechanical shutter closing speed remains unchanged from its predecessor at 1/4000s. On the other hand, the A7CR has a faster mechanical shutter at 1/8000s.

Both cameras have an electronic shutter speed of 1/8000s. Importantly, neither of them features a full mechanical shutter.

What does not having full mechanical shutter mean? Isn’t mechanical shutter a mechanical shutter?

The A7C was already on sale so that is not a problem. I will put the A7IV and A6700 on sale I think and buy the A7C II.

I like the features of my A7RV over the A7CR for what I use it for so that’s a keeper and I think the newer features of the A7C II

Similar situation. I have an a7RV and an a7C. I will sell the a7C. I am leaning toward the a7CII though I think the a7RC is a better deal. I have 9 1/2 hours to figure it out.

I saw late September on something in Dpreview but the Sony press release says, "available in Fall 2023."

I haven't been able to confirm this. Some sites list 1/4000 (Adorama, DPReview) and some 1/8000 (B&H), and I don't recall any of the videos I scrubbed through calling out this difference. Do you know for sure?

The Sony US site lists it as 1/4000 mechanical and 1/8000 electronic.

I was checking the specification footnotes for something different and came across this:

"Based on CIPA standard. Pitch/yaw shake only. With FE 50mm F1.2 GM lens mounted. Long-exposure Noise Reduction off."

I thought that was odd the 50/1.2 was only getting pitch and yaw with the camera, so I checked the rV and 7IV and they have basically the same note. Apparently the 50/1.2 does not roll with any of them.

I should've realized earlier. The details I got from B&H Photo were incorrect. Sony USA states that the A7CR also offers a maximum shutter speed of only 1/4000s.

Sony USA also mentions that EFSC can be turned ON/OFF, so perhaps there is full mechanical for the A7CR. Not sure what to trust to be the correct information now.

Regarding the A7C II, Sony only indicates "YES" for the EFCS options, without any ON/OFF distinction mentioned (you can check the image).

In Japan market both A7CII and A7CR will ship or be delivered to customers from 10/13 as per information on Sony's Japanese website but this could of course be different in other markets.

… if a7cr has full mechanical shutter, sony should give 1/8000 max speed. What’s the point of a 1/4000 max speed mechanical shutter??

None of the YouTube reviews mentioned a full mechanical shutter for the CR.

I think I will just hold on to my Canon R6. At least it has a mechanical shutter, a higher sync speed for flash, 1/8000s maximum shutter speed and a much larger EVF.

Too bad they couldn't make a versatile small camera. This is really only meant for landscape and travel photography.

Just saw this... was hoping for an A7CR but I never thought they'd put that EVF in it. Sold the A7C twice cause I couldn't deal with it after using the A7RIV EVF exclusively since launch. Arghhh, so tempted.

Here's hoping for an A7CRII.

I love the fact that Sony are still developing compact full frame bodies. I had the A7C and loved it when I used them with the Sony 24 and 50 compact G prime lenses. Great for traveling with my family. My only gripe was the flash sync speed of 1/160 only and 1/4000 max shutter speed. I was hoping the 2nd generation would have 1/250 sync speeds and 1/8000 max shutter. Sadly, neither have 1/250 sync speed as it is still 1/160, and the A7CII only has 1/4000 max shutter speed.

I never had a problem with the A7C's EVF, so I don't think the new one really won't be a problem. I just wish they upgraded the LCD screen because the old one had weird color shifts and would show highlights blown out, but they weren't really.

After selling my A7C, I still own a A7RIIIA and honestly, it's more than enough for everyday shooting, even when I want to use Off-Camera flash casually. Good EVF and LCD, and 1/250 sync speed and 1/8000 max shutter. helps loads.

But new shiny compacy full frame bodies are so... tempting. Love it.

On the Japanese Sony website they only mark "Electronic Front Curtain Shutter" 電子先幕シャッター with ● for both models and there is no ON/OFF text for either model in the corresponding field. So I think the On/Off marking in the U.S. site might not be intentional / accurate indicator of a difference between the models.

https://www.sony.jp/ichigan/products/ILCE-7CR/spec.html
https://www.sony.jp/ichigan/products/ILCE-7CM2/spec.html

Both models will be available at Sony Ginza showroom (in Tokyo) for demo purposes from 2nd of September so I will try to check if there is any difference in their user interface settings regarding shutter options if I get a chance to play with them this weekend. There might be separate queues for both models though and they might get long depending on interest level.

Cool! I look forward to hearing your remarks on both models.
Could you also ask if that grip they launched is compatible with other camera models?

I find it ironic that on launch day of A7cR, all the headlines should be about how great Sony is, how smart their engineers are, how much they listen to photographers, how it is a revolutionary product etc, but...

Instead, by my estimate 90% of "Most Popular" posts on DPReview are talking about how "trashy" the EVF, LCD and shutter are.

Then there is Richard Butler from DPReview defending Sony in every technical way possible.

I wouldn't go so far to say Sony has mangled this release, but it's NOT a good look for them right now.

Do you think

There was no way that the A7CR and A7CII could have a great EVF, a great LCD, a full mechanical shutter in a compact body without being even more expensive than the A7RV and A7IV. Sometimes, people dream with their eyes open.

I’m totally confused. I was thinking of ordering the A7CR as a second camera for travel purposes and for times when I want to take a smaller kit with me

I have some fast glass and I’d like to know which kind of shutter the A7CR really has.

It is solely mechanical up to 8000/s or does it have mechanical shutter only upto 4000/s and then the remainder up to 8000 is EFSC? Some people have also mentioned the mechanical shutter on these new cameras is not real or full mechanical. In which way is the shutter different?

What impact will either shutter have on bokeh for faster lenses and at which shutter speed might it become visible?

If anyone has some A7C example photos showing this then that would help me understanding the problem.

Cheers

Matt

On dpreview, they claim that there is no mechanical first curtain on the A7CR. I tend to believe that it's true, like it was true for the previous A7C that I own. If it's like the A7C :

- EFCS in "mechanical" shutter, at every shutter speed, not just the fastest. There is simply no mechanical first curtain
- Full electronic shutter

In EFCS, it can theoretically have an impact on the banding / flickering compared to a faster full mechanical shutter, and it does have a well documented impact at fast shutter speed on the quality of the bokeh. No problem with the bokeh on full electronic mode, but here of course come the numerous problems linked to a slow readout speed (rolling shutter, banding, flickering), all of them more intense than in EFCS.
