p.1 #1 · Two Loon Species

Congratulations to bcd80 for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 16 votes - View Previous Winners

I was fortunate this summer to be able to photograph two species of Loons. One was my usual work with common loons in the Adirondack mountains of upstate NY. But I was also able to photograph Red-throated loons in breeding plumage on nesting habitat as well. Special experience.
I'll split into two posts. Common Loons (Gavia immer) here and Red-throated in the next.
Comments and critiques welcome.
Bruce

These are off the chart good, and the intimate moments of loon parenting should be in a husbandry text book. Just awesome, thanks for sharing, great work!

Thank you very much Eric. You commented before I got the Red-throated photos posted in the thread. Hope you get to see them.

Oh yes, and the same workmanship and appeal applies here. What a unique opportunity to have both. Very cool indeed. 😎 I'm always intrigued by variations yet similar behavioral traits.

This is an amazing set of images... Your work with the common loons is top notch. The many photos of chick riding a parent, as well as chicks being fed make this set special.
I am curious... did you shoot the Red-throated loons in Adirondacks as well? I thought that they breed in the arctic... regardless, you definitely made the most of your opportunity.

Yes, it was fascinating to see the similarities and differences in behavior.

I love to watch all the interactions too! Often, I find myself ignoring the camera just to watch. Appreciate the commment. BTW, I was able to spend an evening/AM on your Nickerson Beach this summer too - always enjoy seeing your work from there.

simply marvelous. How did you get such low angles at close proximity. I know it is extremely difficult to get close to the red throated loons.

Great set of images. I was also going to ask what position you were in to take them.

Beautiful post, Bruce.

You had great subjects and elements to work with. I like your compositions and use / management of light in all of these.
