p.1 #1 · Killdeer in Flight with fall colours

Until this week I hadn't picked up my camera for bird photography since May. I got out to a local pond where I found some Killdeers. These were all taken handheld, in fact I tried to use my tripod but I found it too restrictive and wasn't getting many shots.
Thanks for looking.

Oh yes, I included a Lesser Yellowlegs.

Cheers,
Jason

Seems that I accidentally exported without EXIF data.
All taken with Sony A1 and 600 GM, some with 1.4x. Shutter speed goal was 1/4000, but had to reduce for some.

Great shooting Jason. With so many good ones, why not leave the ones with clipped highlights out?

Thanks for your comment and critique. I guess any clipped highlights didn't jump out at me. Which ones do you suggest I remove or try to fix?

Clipped highlights look just fine and that is the way your eyes saw those whites, so leave them in.

This is a great series of images. The background is so beautiful and really makes the killdeer stand out. Picture #4 stands out to me because of the unique wing position and direct look of the bird.

Super set!

Thanks Tony. I assume we are referring to #1, 4, 8 as having clipped highlights?

Jason, those are what I prefer to call 'whites' and that is the way you saw them. Many images have pure whites and pure blacks and there is no reason to find them objectionable, IMO.

Depending on the distance, the white head of a bald eagle reveals no detail when in bright sunlight. Nor does it need to.

I would say that blown highlights or blocked blacks are perfectly acceptable if it helps you meet your artistic goals! There are different and often conflicting aspects of photography that sometimes make it difficult to judge this kind of thing. On the one hand, you have the "technicals", the aspects of mechanics and technology, telling you not to blow out your highlights. Its "bad" because they can't be recovered with digital, and there is a bit of a taboo about it. On the other hand, you have the "art", the aspects of vision and style that make a photograph all you....Show more

That is the view that I agree with.

Welcome back to bird photography, Jason! Your shots are great, especially considering they were taken handheld. The Killdeers and Lesser Yellowlegs are lovely subjects. Sometimes, flexibility without a tripod can lead to more dynamic shots.
