p.2 #1 · New Leica Summicron-M 28mm F2 ASPH with close-focus
I have a predecessor of this lens, number 11604, a great lens, high quality and compact body, I recommend removing the big and ugly lens hood to use it.
I just wrote a personal review about this lens.

Curious to know what this lens does better than the Voigtlander Ultron? Objectively, I can tell the following:
- Closer MFD than the VM (by 0.1m)
- 6 bit coding
- Built-in hood
The Ultron is:
- Lighter (by 45g)
- Smaller (both in length and diameter - but no hood)
- Obviously cheaper
Both are excellent, but the Leica does not surpass the Voigtlander in terms of resolution and contrast (quite the opposite). The rendering is nearly identical, except the CV 28/2 Ultron exhibits higher optical vignetting, causing specular highlights towards the corners to appear less rounded. I've posted side-by-side comparisons between these two lenses in the CV 28/2 Ultron review.
With the hood attached, the weight difference is only 28g.
The Voigtlander 28mm f/1.5 Nokton (Type I) is 25 grams lighter than the Leica 28/2 Cron II and offers an additional stop of light. Both lenses are roughly the same size and deliver similar performance at comparable apertures.

Thanks Fred. I have the VM 28mm 2.8 and love the size - though the vignetting does get annoying. I have been looking at your review of the Nokton given it isn't too large (didn't realize it was lighter than the Cron) and is faster.

If you are using it on a Leica M, I advise 6-bit coding it to the Leica 28/5.6 Summaron. You will be very happy with the vignetting correction in-camera.

Jono Slack's review says the 28 Cron III CF optics were updated from the version II:
"...the rear element has been adjusted to work as well with the modern M and SL sensors (notably the M11)", and later in the review: "Improved performance with digital sensors".
Curious about the MTF differences at the center from vII to vIII. I have to wonder if Leica simply is providing a more accurate MTF this time around.
I may be going with the Cron CF this time over the Voigtlander because 1) I've had bad luck getting a good copy of the Voigtlander, and 2) closer focus with the Cron by about 4 inches.

The 28/2 Ultron Type II is Not as well made as any Leica lens. The front of mine (with the aperture ring) fell off on a hike, just outside the 2-year warranty period.

I really like the last generation of 28mm and 35mm Summicron/Lux screw-on hoods. It’s a timeless look once screwed onto the lens. The retractable hood is more practical but doesn’t look as good.

How are you all liking the 28mm Summicron CF? It's my favorite focal length I realized (I have the Voigtlander Color Skopar 28mm) and feel ready to upgrade to either the v2 or v3 of the 28mm Summicron
