I just love Billy so much. Shot this backstage at a comedy tv show televised from Hollywood back in 1988. Billy had a long career in entertainment and even beat out Gilbert Gottfried for a part that Gilbert thought he had in the Mel Brooks film, Life Stinks, which I actually saw in the theaters when it came out.
Tech stuff: Some sort of Nikon probably with the venerable 105mm f/2.5, shot on T-Max100, as good then as it is today and, as always, drum scanned on the beautiful 1994 Howtek Hi-Resolve 8000 drum scanner. Almost thirty years old now and still on its original set of vacuum tube photomultiplier tubes - which are the light sensors. Vacuum tube.

Great portrait and a beautiful scan. You really caught his personality.
Cheers,

Thanks Brent. I often wonder if I were in the same situation today if I would make better or not quite as good images. Does the added experience make up for the exuberance of youth. No way to know. It'd just be different I think.

A most excellent composition Peter!
He is a fine human being and a most generous person.
He stands very tall among his peers!
Again very well done!
Dan
Thanks Dan. Mickey Rooney was there that night too. Somewhere there is a shot of Billy sitting on Mickey's lap, and MIckey was only something like five foot nothing - with his gun...

Oh now that would have been a most excellent and happy photo Peter!
Oh and vacuum tubes Bet many here have never seen them! I grew up on crystal radios and tubes! The tubes glowed and heated up the entire area. Especially in my bass's amplifiers!
Peter, OMG 😳 when I look at this image it almost feels like Billy is going to start talking! So real and such a beautiful smile. Man, absolutely stunning capture. Definitely earns my vote. Hope you are well. I have been quite a slacker in photography for over a year now. Maybe with new equipment and new year things will change👍🏻 Happy Holidays

Yes on the vacuum tubes. I remember taking them out of the stereo and up to some store that had a tube tester, but these days I have them in a couple of guitar amps, the drum scanner and two microphones. The trouble with them is that they tend to degrade slowly over time and then all of a sudden you're noticing a crackle that wasn't there but really, it was and had just been creeping up on you.
