I'm just returning from an incredible day photographing high surf on the Oregon Coast. (1/5/24)
The Oregon Coast is well known for its spectacular winter waves and there is no better place to watch the action from than Shore Acres State Park. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of visiting my great grandparents who lived just outside of Coos Bay. My mom and I would visit them around Christmas and every visit I can remember my great grandmother would take us to Shore Acres to see the annual Christmas lights strung throughout the botanical garden. The massive winter waves happened to coincide with our visits. Truthfully, I hardly remember the Christmas lights but the thunderous waves left a lasting impression. I can still recall the thunderous clap of the waves colliding with the cliffs and the taste of salt in my mouth from the spray. I also remember a profound feeling of uncertainty as I held my great grandmother's hand and walked towards the observation area for my first time. The magnitude of the waves was overwhelming. I was likely 3 or 4 years old.
I have returned to Shore Acres many times since then and likely have more photos of waves from the park than any other subject to date. I've been there in extreme wind, rain, wind and rain, calm clear skies, and sometimes a combination of each all in the same day or even hour. This most recent visit to Shore Acres State Park certainly had the best conditions I have experienced there yet. Not a trace of wind, great light all day long, and huge winter waves.
I'm fortunate to be returning to Shore Acres in just a few weeks to lead a photography workshop at the park along with Steven Michael. Steven is a Coos Bay native and a well known Shore Acres photographer with several decades of experience photographing the park as well as the entire Oregon Coast. It's an honor to have him onboard as a co-instructor for this workshop. There are still a couple spots available. WOW!!!
We were planning on being. there that day, too, on our way back to Montana from the Bay Area. However, last minute family obligations changed that plan. Now, I am not sure whether to thank you, Tim for showing us what we missed, or curse you for, again, showing us what we missed!

There's so much to like here. The action in all of them is fantastic, but the dynamism and power captured in the first shot is really impressive. I think the lower contrast in that shot also really works. The birds in 3 and 4 really make them as shots. The sense of scale they provide are fantastic. Seven has wonderful composition and really draws the eye. I love the mood of eight. The color and composition of the last shot is fantastic. If I didn't mention the others it's not that they're not great as well. Thanks for posting these.
