I recently made a trip to the Calgary Alberta area in search of owls, and while I didn’t get a Saw Whet (still my nemesis) or a Great Horned, I did see a Great Grey and Snowy. This was during a Polar Vortex which came over the area, so these were taken in temperatures of -25 C to -40 C, which made things interesting. The 4th image shows the Great Grey activating its Nictitating Membrane, a semi-transparent third eyelid also present in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
