I have been evaluating the new Viltrox 35mm f/1.8 EVO, but I decided to stay with the Nikon 35mm f/1.4 Z. They are very different lenses, but I think for my 35, I would like f/1.4 in a lightweight form factor, and I am OK with a bit of character.

A few from a senior session yesterday using the 35mm f/1.4 Z, all wide open on the Z6 III with off camera flash for fill. Images processed in Capture One with a Fuji-pro-60-ns color profile. Funny thing is, this 35 is becoming one of my favorites.

A few this morning of clematis with the 35mm f/1.4 on the Z6 III. Both images processed with Capture One and have a RNI Fuji Velvia profile applied to bring out the color.

I prefer the 35 f/1.4 Z over the 40 f/2 for the focal length, extra stop, metal mount, and a bit more character. I have used it during a senior photo shoot (see above) and recently at a wedding for getting ready and group shots where it performed well. It is quickly turning into my most used lens on my Z6 III. Of course it is a bit larger than the 40 f/2 but still relatively small for a full frame 35 f/1.4 with AF.

Is it worth getting this lens and get rid of 40/2?
