I finally got to photograph Dalmatian Pelicans in Greece this month. The birds in breeding colors are wonderful, and we were fortunate to have good light for several sessions.
The Dalmatian is the largest pelican breed, weighing about 20 pounds with a wingspan of more than 11'. I knew about their size but was surprised how close they can get to photographers which resulted in lots of clipped wing shots, even with shorter glass.
Thank you for increasing awareness of this bird. I did not know the Dalmatian Pelican existed. It's heartening to see the efforts of Europeans to recover this endangered species.
Ed,
stunning shots. The first one has attitude, the last one reminds me of Rodin's Thinker sculpture, and #5 is amazing - don't think I've ever come across a pelican shot with snow capped mountains in the background.
Were you able to capture any in flight images during your trip?
